"Bilādī, laki ḥubbī wa fuʾādī" (Arabic: بلادي لك حبي وفؤادي; "My homeland, you have my love and my heart"), also known by its incipit as "Bilady, Bilady, Bilady" (بلادي بلادي بلادي), is the national anthem of Egypt, composed by Sayed Darwish and written by Muhammad Yunis al-Qadi. It was adopted in 1979.
The anthem officially consists of three verses, but only the first verse is commonly sung, being both preceded and followed by the chorus. Take a look at its history, English translation, and original lyrics.
History of Egypt National Anthem
Mohamed Younis al-Qady penned the text, while Sayed Darwish wrote the music; both men were well-connected to the pioneers of Egypt's national fight for independence, including Mustafa Kamel. One of Kamel's most well-known remarks served as inspiration for the chorus of Egypt's national anthem.
The first Egyptian national song was actually a royal anthem written to commemorate the pharaoh in 1869. How long this song served as the official anthem is unknown. Despite the fact that the monarchy had been overthrown in 1952, the anthem was included in the anthem of the United Arab Republic when Syria joined in 1958.
Egypt's national song shifted its focus to peace after the 1979 peace treaty with Israel.
Sayed Darwish, a forerunner in Arabic music and a figurehead in Egypt's contemporary renaissance at the turn of the 20th century, was responsible for the score. He was also very friendly with Mustapha Kamel and other pioneers of the Middle Eastern independence movement. Indeed, the chorus was based on phrases from one of Kamel's most well-known addresses. As the republic of Egypt was established, the song's popularity skyrocketed, and many Egyptians began to consider it the country's unofficial national anthem.
