The Australia Bureau of Statistics published a chart comparing birthdays based on births from 2007 to 2016.

Because more people are taking time off work and celebrating the holidays, it seems that people are having babies during this time. This is why September 17 is Australia's most common birthday, occurring nine months after Christmas.

Around the two weeks from mid-September to early-October, four of the ten most common birth dates coincide. Let's now travel back 280 days to our Christmas vacation.

The stars will align towards the end of December. If an annual trip to see in-laws is taken care of, the stress level is at its lowest point ever, both partners are off from work, and it's warm, making getting undressed a simple task. Yes, I will. There are a few intriguing small outliers among the top five, though.

April 8th is the second most common birthday in Australia. This will most likely lead us to the date of conception, which is July 3.

Why is July 3rd so sexy? An after-hours custom honoring the fiscal year's conclusion? Did a baby's peak coincide with the ski season? The most plausible theory, in my opinion, is that Australians migrate to Europe and Bali during the winter to breed.

In essence, it's Christmas in July.

Birthdays in the early to mid-July range are relatively uncommon, except for the more common July 8th and 9th birthdays. Counting 280 days, we will arrive on the weekend of the Grand Final.

That being said, February 29th, which only occurs once every four years, is the least popular birthday.

Less guesswork and more explanation is needed for the less common birthdays. Naturally, February 29 only occurs once every four years.

If February 29 is your birthday, then it could not be more special. Congratulations! You are truly unique!

The remaining rarest birthdays are all observed as public holidays. Christmas, Australia Day, and the Queen's Birthday mean nothing to your baby. Your physician, however, differs.

Physicians typically avoid scheduling Caesarean sections on holidays because approximately 35 percent of births in Australia involve this procedure, which can be somewhat planned and timed. Saturdays and Sundays are relatively uncommon days to be born on, for the same reason.

The C-section babies don't just avoid public holidays on their birthdays: In Australia, maternity wards are comparatively quiet during the entire months of November and December.

After 280 days of backtracking, we reach February and March. Public holidays are not observed for two months.

Additionally, Australian employees just wrapped up their lengthy Christmas break and used up all of their annual leave.

In the end, how and with whom you spend your day matters far more than the day of your birth.

The line chart below shows average births, per day, per year (February 29th is normalized to show the average number of births per year, for each time it occurs in the ten-year period).

Some key highlights

The most common date of birth (September 17th) is roughly 9 months from Christmas / New Year period, meaning there's a lot of baby-making happening during the holiday season.

The least common days (or maybe the most unique?) are key holidays, namely New Years Day (1st January), Australia Day (26th January), Anzac Day (25th April), Christmas Day (25th December) and Boxing Day (26th December). It's evident both parents and doctors prefer to have these days off like the rest of the nation!

September is the most popular month for babies to be born

During the holidays, people do more than just kiss beneath the mistletoe!

First off, more people take their annual leave in December, and more time off, or spent in bed, equals more time for sexual activity.

Thanks to Christmas romance, most babies are born in September!

December is a month when people might attend more parties, which usually translates into drinking more alcohol and using contraception less frequently.

Alternatively, it could be more difficult to obtain contraception or the morning after pill when stores and pharmacies are closed for several days at a time.

Not only does Australia have the highest rates of conception in December, but New Zealand, the United States, and the United Kingdom also have the highest rates of births in September.
