What is Dalgona Coffee?

Essentially, dalgona coffee (달고나 커피) is whipped coffee. It is made with 4 simple ingredients – instant coffee, sugar, hot water and milk. According to the Korean kitchen, coffee, sugar and hot water is added into a bowl and whisked until it reaches creamy, velvety and stiff peak status. This whipped coffee is then dolloped onto your choice of cold or warm milk. Done! As more people are staying at home doing self-distancing and isolating in recent months, making dalgona coffee became a fun new challenge to do at home. And I have to say, it’s quite delicious too! I hope you join the move.

Dalgona coffee was first mentioned on a Korean TV program earlier this year. The name “dalgona” originates from an old fashioned Korean street snack, which has a similar taste to honeycomb toffee. The way dalgona is made sort of resembles the whipped coffee, so a TV personality named the coffee after that. But to be fair, whipped coffee is not a new thing. Some say this coffee is just like Frappe or Indian cappuccino, served upside down.

How to make dalgona coffee?

Dalgona coffee is a drink that’s meant to be made at home and shared online. If you decide to make it by hand, just pretend you’re getting in some light exercise, not that you’re just doing it for the ’gram.

Follow these steps below (collected in the BBC good food) and watch this video to know more about how to make a dalgona coffee:

Step 1:

Whisk the coffee, sugar and 3 tbsp boiling water in a bowl for approximately 5 mins until the mixture is thick and fluffy with stiff peaks. This is easiest done using an electric whisk but can be done by hand.

Step 2:

For hot coffee, heat the milk and pour into two heatproof glasses. For cold coffee, pour the cold milk into two glasses. Divide the coffee mixture in half and spoon evenly on top of the glasses. Serve and stir thoroughly before drinking.

You can make Dalgona Coffee by mixing instant coffee with different kinds of sugar (brown, white, coconut) or sweetener (stevia…) if you’re on diet. However, we tried once with stevia and the taste was awful.

You can use hand mixer to mix the ingredients (the stiff peaks form in less than 5 mins) or you can also use spoon/ whisk to mix it but it may take 20 mins (gave up after 10 mins).

More Ways:

1.Combine instant coffee, sugar and 2 tablespoons hot water in a small mixing bowl.

2.Using a hand mixer, beat the mixture for 3 to 5 minutes, or until the color changes to golden brown and the mixture takes on a thick consistency.

3.Pour the milk into a tall glass with a few ice cubes in it and top with the mixture, using a spatula to coax it out of the bowl. Take a picture, post with #달고나커피, stir and enjoy.

Tips make Dalgona Coffee with Honey

Most of people used sugar for their Dalgona Coffee recipe but today we tried to use honey instead of sugar. The result was amazing with beautiful stiffed foam, according to Nganbalo.

Below are step by step how to make Dalgona Coffee with honey:

  • electric hand mixer/ whisk/ spoon

  • 2 tbsp instant coffee
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 2 tbsp hot water
  • 100 ml cold milk
  • some ice cubes (optional)

Instructions to make Dalgona Coffee with Honey

  • Combine instant coffee with honey and hot water and mix well (Ratio 1:1:1)

  • By hand mixer: mix in lowest speed for around 4-5 mins until stiff peaks form and the color is lighterBy whisk/spoon: you may need to mix it for around 15 mins to 20 mins to see the hard peak depend on how strong you are.

  • Fill your glass with 100ml of cold milk and some ice cubes (optional)

  • Spoon the coffee foam to the top of the milk.

  • Use a spoon to mix a bit before enjoying your coffee

Notes

You can use stevia or other kind of sweetener or different kind of sugar for this Dalgona Coffee recipe. Tip for using filter coffee: put it in the ref overnight before starting to mix it.
