The weird and wonderful things we stumble across on our travels are often the most interesting and memorable things we discover. And there’s no end to the weird things you can find in Australia.

1. Australian don’t lock their doors

As a housesitting traveler in Australia, I've been staying in people's homes. Also, it's really strange that most people don't lock their doors when they leave the house! The woman whose house I stayed at didn't even have keys! I appreciate that people trust each other a lot, but I don't understand why.

2. Horizontal Falls, The Kimberley, WA

"But physics wouldn't let it happen!" you might say. You would also be wrong. As a tourist, you can enjoy the Horizontal Falls in Western Australia. You can even take a boat through the falls.

The falls are really just a small space between two huge bodies of water. When the tide changes, water is pushed through the small opening at an amazing speed, making what looks like a simple vertical waterfall.

There are two more falls that are flat. Interesting things are fun, but what else do we like more? What two-fer deals are.

3. Australian have a weird obsession with Vegemite

Vegemite is an Australian breakfast spread that people eat every day. For people in the UK, it's like Marmite in Australia. Every Australian home has it because it's an important part of their diet. Not many Aussies don't love it. Most people eat Vegemite on toast with butter, but you can even get chocolate bars that taste like Dairy Milk! Most people who aren't from Australia don't like vegemite as much as Australians do.

4. Australianeat kangaroo – their National Emblem!

Not a single other country in the world eats their flag! But not all Australians eat kangaroo; in fact, half of them have never done so. Many Aussies don't eat kangaroo out of pride in their country and because they don't think it's right to eat the animal that's on their coat of arms. But a lot of them have already eaten it.

Before Europeans came to Australia, the native Aboriginal people ate kangaroo as a main food. People don't eat it as much as they used to, but you can still find it in stores and many restaurants serve it as a gourmet dish. A lot of tourists will try it while they are here because it is seen as exotic. Kangaroo meat is healthy because it is lean and low in fat, so Australia sells it to other countries.

5. Elvis Festival, Parkes, NSW

A festival honoring Elvis Presley filled a small town with hundreds of people dressed as the singer. You've never seen anything like it before. Every January, the Parkes Elvis Festival takes place in Parkes, New South Wales. It lasts for five days and has more than 200 events.

Hundreds of Elvis fans dress up as the singer, with varying levels of success, and it's likely that they've done this at all stages of his life, including his later "Fat Elvis" years. You crazy cats in regional Australia.

6. Cyclists wear spikes on their helmets

Some guys' helmets had spikes sticking out of them at first, which I thought was weird. But when I saw why, it all made sense. It does not happen every day of the year, though. You can only see them during the "magpie swooping season" (four to six weeks in the spring, July to November).

In Australia, magpie season can be scary! When it's time to breed, male magpies and crows can get very mean and protective. If people come close to their nest and the bird sees them as a threat, it will swoop down on them and may even strike. They do it to protect their nest, but it's really scary, especially since you won't know where the nests are, so it will probably catch you off guard!

7. Lake Hillier, WA

Another natural event that doesn't seem to exist is Lake Hillier, which is on Middle Island off the south coast of Western Australia. The bright pink color of the lake makes you wonder if it was altered in Photoshop. Not at all, no. Lichens that live in the salty water of the lake give it its pink color.

Middle Island is only used for scientific research and can't be reached by the public. However, you can see it from above by taking a scenic helicopter flight over the lake.

They also put a lot of value on family and follow the idea of walkabout, which means the need to go back to holy places.

Australia has long-term problems with pollution, especially the thinning of the ozone layer, and taking care of and protecting coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef. Australia was a commonwealth ruled by the British queen until 1999. In that year, a vote to change it to a republic was lost.
