Working is great, isn’t it? The ability to provide for yourself and, if applicable, family members is an awesome feeling. There are thousands upon thousands of different potential jobs that are available to those who want to work. However, not all jobs are created equal in terms of how much physical ability they require. Some jobs are more suited to those who enjoy using their brains instead of their strength.
If you enjoy working with numbers or people, then a less labor-intensive job is probably right for you. But if you like to feel like you’ve gone through a good workout at the end of the day, then a general labourer job is more physically suited for you. We’ve compiled a list of several of the most physically demanding jobs in Canada right now. Make no mistake, these jobs require you to be in great shape, but they might be right up your alley.
7. Firefighter

Another physical demanding job is being a firefighter. Firefighters are such a vital part of our communities–and you can become part of that, if you feel led toward the firefighting path. Just be aware that this job is very physically demanding. You’ll need to engage in a variety of different activities while on the job, sometimes under the risk of death. It’s definitely only a job for the dedicated, but if becoming a firefighter is the job path that’s really calling to you, go for it!

Tower climbing is one of the deadliest jobs in the world. According to an experienced cell tower climber, Joe Pouline, many dangers come with this job: ‘If you’re putting things on the tower and someone isn’t paying attention, they could crush your hand. Or if you’re on the ground, tools or equipment could fall on your head. You could fall. You could get struck by lightning. There’s a long list of stuff that could go wrong.’
4. Alaskan crab fisherman

Often described as the most dangerous job in the world, crab fishing involves long hours at rough seas searching for crabs. Weather conditions are arduous, and conditions on board can be gruelling. Fishermen are required to work for up to 24 hours non-stop searching for crab, and if there are no crabs to be caught, there is no money to be made. But a good catch can earn tens of thousands of pounds in one month, so if you have what it takes, you may be in a position to earn a great deal of money.
3. Oil rig worker

This is a physically and mentally taxing job that involves long hours in a challenging and hostile environment. Jobs can vary from cleaner to painter right through to driller or tool pusher. Wages are often calculated on an hourly basis with accommodation and meals included. The typical work schedule will involve working on the rig for six weeks, followed by six weeks of leave. There is great potential to make a substantial amount of money, and so the risk associated with oil rig work is often downplayed by those wanting to earn a high salary.
2. Military

All military roles have their difficulties, but challenging roles such as a marine and mercenary are among the hardest in the world. These positions require soldiers to put their lives at risk on a daily basis. However, the high paycheque can make up for the serious stress and possible trauma that may result.
1. Astronauts

This entry is the embodiment of the scope of this article. It’s quite ironic that a career deemed as the most physically demanding on this planet is actually leaving it. However, each aspiring space traveler is required to undergo intense physical training, which includes movement in zero gravity and withstanding a huge amount of pressure, to ensure success of the operation as a whole. The danger in space is infinite, much like space itself, and so are the things trying to kill you. Since the universe is literally a huge bunch of nothing with some stars in it, there is no task more daunting than entering into the unknown. This places astronauts into a league of their own in terms of physical capabilities. |
