Top 15 craziest but true divorce stories - Knowinsiders.com

According to the American Psychological Association, about 40 to 50 percent of married couples in the United States get divorced.

The divorce rate for subsequent marriages is even higher. The most commonly reported major contributors to divorce are lack of commitment, infidelity, and conflict/arguing. However, there are plenty of other situations that have caused couples to split, and some of them are quite strange. Whatever the reason is, these are just the weirdest, craziest and some, just plainly dumbest divorce stories that you have ever heard of.

What is a divorce?

A divorce is a legal action between married people to terminate their marriage relationship. It can be referred to as dissolution of marriage and is basically, the legal action that ends the marriage before the death of either spouse.

The purpose of a divorce is to terminate the parties’ marriage. In order to do that the parties and the court must decide how to handle the questions of custody and placement of the minor children and how to divide the property and debts of the parties. State laws presume each party is entitled to one half of the marital property and each party is responsible for one half of the marital debts. Non-marital property would be property inherited by one of the parties or given to just one of the parties by a third person and, if it has been kept separate it will remain with that person after the divorce.

Depending on the length of the marriage, the age and health of the parties and each parties' ability to earn an income and maintain the marital standard of living, the court may order spousal support paid by one spouse to the other. This is a different question from child support. Alimony can be for a limited period or for an indefinite period depending on the circumstances. It can be reviewed if there is a significant change in the circumstances of either former spouse.

15. He scammed me (Shared by a divorce lawyer for Business Insider)

"In our less than seven-month marriage, my then-husband schemed and scammed between $60,000-100,000 from me. In the almost year-long courtship, he groomed me.

"I'm about the fifth or sixth person he's scammed, and I got out pretty quickly — but I'm in so much debt because of him. I'm trying to save my credit and make payments while hoping I'll recoup some or any of my money through the legal system."

14. He committed fraud (Shared by a divorce lawyer for Business Insider)

"In this case, the parties' divorce was ongoing for several years. Lawyers working for both parties were engaged in valuing the marital estate, which included substantial debt. At primary issue, the valuation of the husband's business, a printing and advertising company. The company was (allegedly) in the cellar, barely scraping by, and under significant debt. The warehouse had, literally, been flooded by recent rainstorms.

"As a result of all of these events, the wife's attorneys (not us!) and the wife, upon the recommendation of the forensic accountant that had been appointed by the court to perform valuation issues and forensic work, agreed that the value of the business was minimal, at best. A settlement agreement was signed with wife waiving her rights to the business for just a minimal payout (which was to be paid out to her over five years).

"Fast forward 363 days after the divorce: Wife learns that not only had husband sold his business shortly after the parties' divorce, but that he was even hired by the company to run their new division! She came and hired us, with two days to go to reopen the divorce case (which has a one-year look back) on the basis of the husband's fraud.

"After working around the clock, we filed an application with the court, which was granted, compelling the husband to provide the details about the sale. What was found was unbelievable: the husband had sold the business literally the same day that he had signed the settlement agreement and the parties' were divorced!

"He had lied to his lawyer, lied to the forensic accountant, and lied to the court. Suffice it to say, months and months of litigation ensued, ultimately culminating in the wife's receipt of a substantial additional settlement. Lesson to be learned: Investigation is key."

— Karolina Dehnhard, divorce attorney

13. He had a double life (Shared by a divorce lawyer for Business Insider)

"In this case, we represented an educated woman, a doctor, in a long-term marriage. The husband, a dual resident of both the United States and France, was working for a French investment bank, which necessitated constant travel overseas.

"As the trips grew longer, and the parties' credit card bills mounted, the wife was faced with not only her job obligations, but also with dealing with their two teenage children (both with psychological issues and one with an eating disorder).

"As the divorce case continued, the parties' bank and credit card records were reviewed by a forensic accountant, as well as the wife's divorce attorneys. What was found was astonishing (but not, necessarily, unsurprising); the husband had a second life in France, with a girlfriend who he was supporting in Europe, flying all over the continent, and spending thousands upon thousands of dollars on. At the same time, he was fighting our client over necessary medical treatment for their teenage daughter.

"The case ended with the wife, our client, receiving a six-figure credit from the husband's share of the marital estate for his dissipation of marital assets, as well as compelling husband's contributions to their daughters' ongoing needs. Lesson to be learned: If something doesn't feel right, it generally isn't."

— Karolina Dehnhard, divorce attorney

12. We're fighting over an engagement ring (shared by a divorce lawyer for Business Insider)

"I have a case currently being litigated where the engagement ring was being fought over. It belonged to Dad's family, but he gave it to Mom, and Mom wanted to keep it for the parties' daughter. We reached a compromise where Mom would keep it only for the daughter's future use, but just as we were signing the documents, Dad's attorney came in and asked: 'What if the daughter doesn't want to use it OR DIES?'

"My heart stopped. I was like, ‘Who cares what happens to a ring if your child is gone?' But since the issue was raised, we had to address it. We decided that if the daughter didn't want it or could not use it, it would be sold and the funds donated in her name to a non-profit."

11. You Are Beautiful On The Inside. NOT!

In China, a man named Jian Feng filed for divorce from his beautiful wife when he found out the truth about said beauty.

With that being the case, Feng initially accused his wife of cheating. It was at that point that his wife, who has not been named, came forward, saying she had spent $100,000 on intense plastic surgeries to drastically change her appearance before she met Feng.

She never told Feng about those surgeries.

When Feng found out about the procedures, he filed the lawsuit. He said the woman convinced him to marry her under false pretenses.

A judge agreed, awarding Feng $120,000.

10. I’m All In (Literally)

Ms McCormick described her husband's ballot as a 'deal breaker' (REUTERS)

Burning passions over Donald Trump's presidency are taking a personal toll on both sides of the political divide. For Gayle McCormick, it was particularly wrenching: she separated from her husband of 22 years.

The retired California prison guard, a self-described "Democrat leaning toward socialist," was stunned when her husband casually mentioned during a lunch with friends last year that he planned to vote for Trump – a revelation she described as a "deal breaker."

"It totally undid me that he could vote for Trump," said McCormick, 73, who had not thought of leaving the conservative Republican before but felt "betrayed" by his support for Trump.

"I felt like I had been fooling myself," she said. "It opened up areas between us I had not faced before. I realised how far I had gone in my life to accept things I would have never accepted when I was younger." - According to Independent UK.

8. Woman seeks divorce from husband over his dislike of Frozen

Of all the reasons why you might want to end your marriage, not liking Frozen wouldn’t generally rank that highly.

In the case of one Japanese woman, though, her differences of opinion with her husband over the Disney smash is turning out to be grounds for divorce.

According to the website Kikonsha no Hakaba – or as it’s known in English, The Gravesite Of Married People – the anonymous 29-year-old became obsessed with the film after going to see it on her own several times, before persuading her spouse to join her.

But despite hoping he would also love the film due to having studied Danish Literature at university – with Frozen being based on the Hans Christian Andersen tale The Snow Queen – she was shocked to discover his reaction was very different.

After telling her ‘I didn’t really care for it personally,’ he apparently left their six-year marriage in tatters by asking his wife: ‘Did you really think it was that good?’

She furiously responded: ‘If you can’t understand what makes this movie great, there’s something wrong with you as a human being!’ before telling him she wanted a divorce.

7. Marriage Is a Game

One wife who blames her husband’s obsession for the breakdown of their marriage is Jessica Ellis, 24, from London.

She said: ‘He was addicted to World of Warcraft but played other games now and then. The amount he was playing gradually increased until I could not take it any more.

‘When it became serious he was playing up to eight hours a day. I was constantly trying to get him to cut back but he didn’t think he had a problem until I told him I wanted to leave. But by that time it was too late.’

Ryan G Van Cleave, an expert on video game addiction, said many partners were unaware that gaming can become an addiction.

He said: ‘The problem spouses encounter with video game addiction is that the non-gamer doesn’t appreciate that it’s an addiction. This means it’s not a choice to spend so much time in a virtual environment versus time with the spouse and family. It’s a compulsion.

‘The reality is that with the proper professional support, a video game addict, like any other type of addict, can overcome the addiction.’

The study looked at 200 unreasonable behaviour petitions filed by women.

Divorce Online managing director Mark Keenan said his team carried out the research after noticing World of Warcraft was repeatedly cited by unhappy wives.

He said: ‘I was surprised by the result at first, but I would expect the number to be even higher next year.

‘The increase could be a consequence of people staying indoors more because of the recession, or it might be being used by men in particular as a means of escape from an already unhappy relationship.’

6. Running to Get Divorced?

In 2008, Wang Yueting, a 56 year old Chinese man was divorced by his wife because he ran across China to show his support for the Beijing Olympics. According to his wife, Wang sold his apartment and purchased a van and supplies for the run. He also hired a team of six men to help him on his mission. On the side of the van, he painted the words “Support Beijing Olympics” in Chinese as well as in English. His wife warned him saying that she would divorce him if he went through with it. He refused to listen as he believed she was bluffing but when he finished his run, she carried out her plans and divorced him.

5. She was "possessed by the devil"

An Italian man has been granted a divorce by claiming his wife is 'possessed by the devil' after witnesses said they'd seen her levitate. The woman has displayed 'inexplicable behaviour' since 2007 such as fits, stiffening and other 'unusual phenomena,' a court in Milan heard.

Her husband pinned the behaviour on 'demonic possession.' Witnesses said they even saw the devout Catholic woman levitate before crashing to the ground, according to Il Corriere della Sera.

The woman's sister, a priest and a monk confirmed that they had witnessed the episodes. They even testified that she had knocked over a church pew before throwing it towards the altar with one hand.

The Milan court tribunal acknowledged that the woman was 'clearly agitated' but said she 'did not act knowingly'. Several exorcists have attempted to cure her over the years and the couple, who have two children, were eventually granted a no-fault divorce.

Demonic possession and exorcisms are controversial but lively topics within the Catholic Church.

4. Divorce because husband kept feeding stray dogs

After being married for 50 years, Eliza, a 70 year old Romanian woman finally decided that she needed to be separated from her husband. She said that her husband had been spending all their money on feeding the stray dogs around their neighborhood. Whatever pension had been coming in for the couple, the husband was spending on buying food for the dogs he so dearly cared for. But what he did not realize was that he was leaving their house empty and without any meals. Eliza recalls her husband buying some scraps of food for just a couple of dogs initially and found it extremely touching but towards the end of their marriage, the husband was feeding over 20 stray dogs which meant food from the house was being taken out. Unable to deal with the loss, she decided to file for divorce.

The reason behind the large number of stray dogs in Romanian cities is because during the 80’s many people were forced out of their homes in the country to live in apartment buildings in the city. These families left behind their belongings as well as their pets.

3. When pets get between marriage

Then there are couples like Mark and Vicki Dodge. Happily married for 25 years, their problems started to emerge when they introduced a dog into their home.

"We fight over her health." said Vicki. "Mark seems to be overly concerned. Takes her to the doctor at the drop of a hat."

The couple also argues over the dog's eating habits and how much time they spend with the two-year-old pointer.

"Vicki is not that warm; she's a little jealous," said Mark. "Sort of like, 'You love the damn dog more than you love me.' It's ridiculous." - According to ABC News.

2. "She posted about it on SnapChat"

A Saudi Arabian man has asked for a divorce from his new bride just two hours after the wedding after it emerged she had posted pictures of it on social media.

The unnamed groom broke up with his wife after learning she had sent pictures of the wedding to her friends on Snapchat in violation of a strict clause in their prenup which forbade sharing the images on social media.

The bride’s brother told Saudi newspaper Okaz: “There was a prenuptial agreement she would not use social-media applications such as Snapchat, Instagram or Twitter to post or send her pictures which she did sign.

“It was included in the marriage contract and became binding. Unfortunately, my sister did not honour the pledge and used Snapchat to share pictures from the wedding ceremony with her female friend”.

The bride’s family reportedly argued that the husband was being too harsh but his family said he was entitled to call for a divorce.

Under Saudi law, men have the unilateral power to divorce their wives without any legal grounds – effectively immediately.

Women on the other hand need the consent of their husbands or the judiciary before dissolving a marriage and lose custody of their children if they are over a certain age.

1. Nicknamed to Divorce

In the year 2009, a Saudi woman divorced her husband of 17 years when she learned of the name he was calling her. The woman went through his cell phone one day while it was out and she looked through the contacts when she came across her number stored under the name “Guantanamo”. As we all know, Guantanamo is a military prison in the United States.

Seeing this nickname, the woman was furious and immediately asked for a divorce settlement from her husband. Although he said he thought it would be funny and believed that she would share his sense of humor, the wife could not bear the thought of her husband referring to her as a prison. She said that the name was extremely harsh and rude in his part.
