3. Danakil Depression, Ethiopia

Danakil Depression

The Danakil Depression in Ethiopia is one of the world's lowest points, measuring 124 meters below sea level. At the same time, this is one of the world's hottest places, with winter temperatures consistently above 40 degrees Celsius and little precipitation. However, mercury temperatures can sometimes reach 50°C.

This hot spring is sulfur-rich, with bubbling lava and thick salt formations awaiting explorers. From the Pleistocene to 30,000 years ago, Red Sea water periodically flooded the Danakil Depression before evaporating, leaving a 2 km thick layer of salt and sediment on the surface. The magma reservoir of the Dallol volcano lies beneath the salt layer, so the freshwater that infiltrates from the surrounding highlands contains minerals and acid gases.

"The interaction between water, magma, and salt fossils is the source of all the extreme chemical and physical parameters in this area," says Barbara Cavalazzi, a geologist at the University of Bologna in Italy. However, the temperature, salinity, and acidity levels here are lethal to most organisms found elsewhere on Earth, and life can survive in extreme environments.

Lake Hillier

Lake Hillier, located on the edge of Middle Island off Western Australia's coast, is the world's most famous salt lake due to its bubblegum pink color. Even when water is drawn from the lake and placed in a tank, the color of the lake remains constant.

Dunaliella salina, a type of green bacteria found in lake water, is thought to be responsible for the color. The analysis also revealed the presence of various bacterial species in lake water.

Despite its high salinity, Lake Hillier is suitable for swimming. However, this action is prohibited in order to preserve rare microorganisms in the lake, and the best way to view the lake is from above.

Canadian Spotted Lake

This lake, located on the east side of the Similkameen Valley, gets its name from the many minerals that accumulate on the water's surface. Tourists compare the lake to a giraffe's long neck. In fact, after careful examination, scientists discovered that the lake's salinity, combined with its mineral composition, may allow the lake's water to heal a variety of diseases.

The Okanagan tribe of First Nations has long believed that the lake has the ability to heal a wide range of injuries and illnesses. According to The Earth Chronicles of Life, an old tribal story claims that the lake was able to end an ancient war between tribes by healing the warriors' wounds so quickly that they decided fighting was pointless.
