K-pop, or Korean pop, has become a worldwide phenomenon due to the influence of "Hallyu," or the Korean wave.

For better or worse, K-pop girl and boy groups frequently have very different styles, choreographies, tones, narratives, and musical selections. It is difficult to compare them side by side because many girl groups' more subtle and intricate sounds are nearly drowned out by the boy groups' frequently aggressive production and dance routine. Most of the time, they might come across as upbeat and lighthearted, but if you look past the sometimes obvious surface layers, they can be quite vicious.

Their songs are nothing short of an audio-visual treat, thanks to their wide range of genres, synchronized choreography, deft camera work, and eye-catching fashion trends. With their intense performances and euphonious vocals, Korean girl groups are currently ruling the pop music scene, even though BTS and EXO are two of the most successful K-pop boy bands in the world.

Take a look at these ten K-pop groups that are all female and have become global sensations, topping charts all over the world.

1. S.E.S

The South Korean girl group S.E.S., which stands for Sea, Eugene, and Shoo, was formed in 1997 by SM Entertainment and consisted of Bada, Eugene, and Shoo. With 650,000 copies sold, their debut album "I'm Your Girl" became the second best-selling album by a female group in South Korea. Their subsequent albums, "Love," "Sea & Eugene & Shoo," and "A Letter from Greenland" in 2000, all went on to become best-sellers. In the early stages of their careers, they were referred to as H.O.T.'s female labelmates.

S.E.S is regarded as one of the first really successful girl groups in K-pop. Groups like Fin.K.L and Baby V.O.X, who made their debuts shortly after S.E.S. and were also successful, presented a challenge to them.

It was confirmed in October 2016 that the members of the group would reunite to commemorate the 20th anniversary of their debut. Later, SM declared that the band would make a comeback with a concert and an album. As part of their 20th anniversary project, the group released the hit song "Love [story]" in November 2016 under SM's music project, SM Station. The project also included a concert, album, and reality show. On January 2, 2017, they released their 20th anniversary special album "Remember," which featured the double title tracks "Remember" and "Paradise."

2. Wonder Girls

Before splitting up at the start of the year, Wonder Girls—one of the most resilient acts in the business—ruled South Korea with their updated version of retro-pop. Following a botched attempt to break into the U.S. market and a few lineup changes, the group's band-oriented Reboot in 2015 is one of the most significant and successful rebrandings K-pop has ever seen. Hits like "Tell Me" and "Nobody" were some of the first-ever viral successes in the genre. The synthpop slow burn "I Feel You" and the psychedelic "Why So Lonely" helped Wonder Girls close things out on a very positive note, and it produced late-career greats.

Four minutes Due to health concerns, Hyuna had to leave the Wonder Girls a few months before the group's debut. The group made their debut with the song Irony, which sounds a lot like a song from the late 2000s (which is a good thing). Tell Me, their first big hit, helped the group become instantly successful. Being a widely recognized musical genius, JYP truly showed off his skills when it came to the Wonder Girls discography. as everyone would soon discover.

For a while, The Wonder Girls ruled K-Pop and conducted a lucrative global tour. Sunmi was a member of the group until 2010, when she decided to leave to focus on her academics. Hyerim, a newcomer, took her place, and the group would go on.

There is no denying Wonder Girls' legacy. With their song Nobody, Wonder Girls opened the door for other K-Pop groups looking to enter the American market. No other K-Pop group has ever been able to pull off retro sounds quite like WG. They certainly deserve to be considered among the all-time great K-Pop groups.

3. 2NE1

With their debut single, "Fire," released in 2009, the "I Am the Best" quartet immediately took over K-pop with their intense charisma. Through their hard-hitting hip-hop style, 2NE1 paved the way for a more empowered side to K-pop girl groups and launched the act to unprecedented heights in their career. 2NE1 won over K-pop fans all over the world with their combination of intense hits and more somber songs like "Ugly" and "Lonely." Before BTS's Wings overtook it in October of last year, 2NE1's final album, 2014's Crush, was the highest-ranked Korean album on the Billboard 200 for two years. Despite this, they struggled to move forward after peaking and took a break between 2014 and their breakup track early this year.

2NE1 has impacted the K-Pop industry in a variety of ways. They stood out from all other girl groups, both before and after they became the K-Pop royalty. The hairstyles, the clothes, and the music were all legendary.

Every member of 2NE1 is still active on their own, and both Bom and Minzy have released new music recently. While there have been some hints of a reunion, nothing official has been said as of yet. All blackjacks can do is hope.

4. Girls’ Generation

Girls Generation, also known as 소녀시대 (So Nyuh Shi Dae or SNSD), is arguably the most adored girl group in Kpop history. Taeyeon, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona, Seohyun, and formerly Jessica make up the Nation's Girl Group. In August of 2007, the original nine-piece group released Into The New World. Girls Generation was breaking records and selling 200,000 copies of their debut album right away after their debut.

Despite having a great beginning, Gee's debut mini-album was the catalyst for their rise to fame. Gee is arguably the song that has converted the most fanboys to Kpop history. It was the pinnacle of bubblegum Kpop music, taking home 14 ridiculous music show titles. Gee earned the title of "Song of the Decade." From that point on, SNSD spread throughout the world. They were once making $1.4 million a year just from endorsements. They shot significantly more commercials and advertisements than any other Korean celebrity.

They have won 71 music show awards and sold almost five million albums in the past ten years. The modern Kpop sound was built upon the foundation of SNSD. Without SNSD's influence, many girl groups would not have been formed. They had, in effect, cleared the path for a second group of nine.

5. Brown Eyed Girls

Brown Eyed Girls, one of the longest-running girl groups still together, is praised by Billboard for their willingness to push the envelope, writing that "with conceptually driven pop songs that exude power, the quartet -- K-pop's longest-running girl group without any member changes -- is always happy to push the envelope a bit."

Brown Eyed Girls' "Abracadabra" is a sleeper track that isn't as obvious as many others on this list. When you hear the intro and see the little hip dance that went insanely viral long before TikTok, you'll understand why it was such a huge hit. Brown Eyed Girls' breakthrough song "Abracadabra" put them on the map as independent and mature city girls, but the video was heavily criticized for being far too racy. However, as with the other songs on this list, the suggestive aspects of the video have a lot of power depending on who is watching.

6. Sistar

Starship Entertainment formed Sistar in 2010 and they quickly became known for their suggestive music and their tans. Yes, you read that correctly. Pale skin is popular in South Korea. Tans? Not at all.

However, it didn't take long for the group to achieve success with their single So Cool. The song debuted at number one on the Billboard Korea K-Pop Hot 100 chart shortly after its inception.

Summer arrives, and the girls have found their niche. And the summer hits poured in. Touch My Body, I Swear, Loving U, and Shake It would go on to become some of the group's biggest hits, establishing Sistar as the Queens of Summer K-Pop.

All good things must come to an end, and the group disbanded in 2017 after performing their best hits and their final title track Lonely on music shows.

Members Soyou and Hyolyn are still active as soloists in the music industry, while Daseom and Bora have moved into acting. It's great that they're still active, but their breakup has left a gap in Summer K-pop that has yet to be filled.

Sistar will be missed, but their summer bops will always make us happy on hot summer days!

The following year, they cemented their position in the K-Pop world with the album Pink Funky, which featured the title song "Um Oh Ah Yeh." Mamamoo, best known for their funky pop songs, surprises the audience with a powerful pop ballad "Paint Me" (2017) that highlights the group's soulful side.

BLACKPINK, who debuted in August 2016, is one of the most popular all-girl K-pop groups. The four-member South Korean pop group set a record with the most first-day views for their 2018 single "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" from their mini-album Square Up, which was released by YG Entertainment.

Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa, members of the quartet, are also well-known for their fashion sense and have been dubbed fashion icons. While they can all sing, Jennie and Lisa are rappers who add a unique twist to the band's overall upbeat vibe. Blinks are the fans of this K-pop group.
