What are the fuel prices in the UK?

With fuel prices fluctuating, it pays to use the cheapest sites to help reduce costs. Fuel can account for as much as 25% of vehicle running costs, so smarter purchasing can help you save money. We've summed up a list of the cheapest in the UK to help you save money.

The prices above are the latest average petrol, diesel and liquid petroleum gas (LPG) prices across supermarket and independent forecourts in the UK, and are updated daily where data is available. Data is provided without warranty, as rac.co.uk reported.

The average price of petrol increased by 11p a litre in May – the second largest monthly increase ever seen, data from RAC Fuel Watch shows. A litre of unleaded rose from 162.87p at the start of May to 174.02p by the close. This was less than a penny short of the all-time biggest rise recorded in March when a litre of petrol jumped by 11.61p (151.67p to 163.28p).

According to media.rac.co.uk, the major difference with the May rise, however, is that this happened after the historic 5p-a-litre duty cut invoked by Chancellor Rishi Sunak on 23 March and, of course, despite this, the cost of a litre has rocketed to yet another record high.

May also saw average diesel prices climb to new heights with a litre going up to 183p, a hike of more than 5p which takes the cost of a complete tank above £100 for the first time ever. A full tank of petrol also hit the landmark cost of £95.

The punitive pump price hike has been driven by oil rising from $106.07 to a late month high of $124.45 (31 May) – a 17% increase, combined with a weaker pound at $1.2 – an important factor as fuel, like oil, is traded in dollars on the wholesale market which can dramatically affect the price retailers pay to buy it.

The price we pay for fuel at the pumps is affected by a variety of factors, including:

-The global price of crude oil - the oil price chart below shows how this is changing

-Supply and demand for crude oil

-Refinery production and capacity

-The pound to dollar exchange rate, as refined fuel is sold in US dollars

-Distribution costs

-The margin fuel retailers decide to take

-Fuel duty charged by the Government

-VAT charged at the end of every forecourt fuel transaction

The average price of a litre of unleaded across the big four supermarkets, which dominate UK fuel retailing, went up nearly 9p from 160.31p at the beginning of May to 169.05p by the end. Diesel increased from 174.18p to 180.38p – a jump of 6p a litre.

On the motorway a litre of petrol closed May at 187.66p, up by nearly 5.5p from 182.19p at the start. Diesel finished the month at 197.71p, up from 192.5p, with the prospect of hitting £2 a litre very real in the near future. In terms of where prices might head next, the RAC expects average petrol prices to hit 185p as a result of the rising cost of oil, with diesel heading towards the 190p mark.

Northern Ireland, part of the United Kingdom, lying in the northeastern quadrant of the island of Ireland, on the western continental periphery often characterized as Atlantic Europe. Northern Ireland is sometimes referred to as Ulster, although it includes only six of the nine counties which made up that historic Irish province.

The price of unleaded 95 octane, diesel, and super unleaded fuel in Northern Ireland have fluctuated greatly. The highest price was seen in March 2022, with diesel price at 173.3 pence per liter. The price of each fuel dropped to their lowest price in May 2020, with the price of diesel amounting to 108.3 pence per liter. Super unleaded fuel was on average the most expensive fuel during this period, while unleaded 95 octane was the cheapest.

The North East LEP covers the local authority areas of County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside and Sunderland. Within this area, we have a population of two million people and a skilled and resilient workforce. The North East is built to work, with local road, rail, air and digital infrastructures giving easy access to local jobs.

The North East is one of the cheapest places in the UK to fill your car up, figures reveal.

However that is a bit of an empty boast as fuel prices continue to soar. Experts warned MPs this week that petrol prices could soar to £2.50 a litre while diesel could hit £3 as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Figures from data firm Experian Catalist show the average cost of a litre of petrol at UK forecourts on Monday was 163.7p.

This takes the cost of filling a typical 55-litre family car with petrol above £90 for the first time. The average cost of a litre of diesel on Monday was a record 173.7p. If prices reach £2 per litre, this would put the average cost of filling a medium tank at a staggering £100, as chroniclelive.co.uk reported.

3. Yorkshire & Humberside - Unleaded petrol (E10): 173.52p; Diesel: 182.31p

The cost of fuel in Hull and around East Yorkshire has risen sharply again today with drivers of diesel vehicles warned prices could remain high for some time. Attempts to move away from Russian supply lines has created a tightening of diesel stocks and rising prices for retailers. These are being passed on to customers with the average cost of a litre of diesel now passing above 180p for the first time, as hulldailymail.co.uk reported.

The cost of a litre of unleaded has also bounced sharply back above £1.60 after the slashing of fuel duty in the Spring Budget. Despite the 5p drop in costs for retailers, the price of fuel never dipped as far for customers themselves.

4. Scotland - Unleaded petrol (E10): 174.45; Diesel: 182.90

Since 2017, the price of diesel fuel in Scotland has fluctuated significantly. Despite dropping to a low of 110.8 pence per liter in May 2020, as a direct result of the global coronavirus pandemic, prices presented a trend of growth in the preceding years. During the period in consideration, diesel fuel price peaked at 172.4 pence per liter in March 2022. During this period, Scottish drivers generally paid more than the UK average for diesel fuel.

Although there has been a noticeable price increase in diesel since 2017, it remains cheaper than super unleaded fuel. The difference in price between diesel and super unleaded in Scotland varied and unleaded could be as much as 10 pence per liter cheaper. However, by the end of 2018 the price gap began to decrease, and in February 2019 there was a difference of less than one pence per liter. By March 2022, this difference was of some four pence per liter, statista.com reported.

Why are fuel prices going up?

The Ukraine Russia conflict is having an impact, with the cost of oil impacting upon the cost of fuel. Russia is one of the largest producers of oil in the world, and disruption to its shipping and production will cause a shortage, where supply struggles to keep up with demand.

The price of a barrel of Brent crude oil reached a 14 year high on March 7, 2022 when traders saw it spike at $139. Russia is third only to Saudi Arabia and the USA for oil production - Russia produces approximately 4.5 billion barrels of oil per day. The overall cost of oil is rising, too. This cost has risen sharply in the 12 months from January 2021, rising from around £55 per barrel to approximately £102 per barrel in February 2022.

5. Wales - Unleaded petrol (E10): 173.47p; Diesel: 182.87p

Since 2017, the price of different fuel in Wales has fluctuated significantly. Overall, all fuel prices peaked in March 2022, and dropped to its lowest in May 2020. In March 2022, unleaded 95 octane, and diesel were sold at 162.2, and 172.8 pence per liter, respectively. During this period, Welsh drivers generally had lower prices for super unleaded fuel than the United Kingdom average.

The cost of a litre of fuel is not universal across Wales, and both the price and the availability of choice varies across the country.

The East Midlands is the fourth largest region in England. Most of the East Midlands is low-lying. The chalky Chiltern Hills lie along the southern boundary of this region. North of these in Northamptonshire, lies the valley of the river Nene, running between two ridges of higher ground. Further north, in Lincolnshire, the county consists of heathland, with wolds (low hills) to the east, and marshland over in the west running towards the North Sea. The river Trent, England's third largest river, runs through Nottinghamshire to join the river Ouse and form the Humber.

The most important cities and towns are the ancients ones of Lincoln, Nottingham, Bedford, Ely, and Northampton. The largest city and the generally recognized "capital" of the East Midlands is Nottingham. Grimbsy, in northeast Lincolnshire is a fishing port.

Six tips to drive more efficiently

You can drive the same distance, in the same car, without slowing down, but using less fuel – better for your wallet, better for the environment. The key is to drive smoothly. Here are the seven tips you need to know.

1. Accelerators are money pumps – accelerate gradually

Speed up smoothly. The harder you press on the accelerator, the more fuel will flow – but you can reach the same speed using much less power. As a rough rule, stay under 3,000 revs. Plus, if you accelerate too quickly, chances are you'll then have to brake hard, which isn't exactly efficient.

2. Change up a gear sooner

Always drive in the highest gear possible without labouring the engine. So change up much earlier than feels natural – it'll take some pace out of your acceleration, but as that's our first tip it isn't a bad thing. If you have a fuel efficiency display, you'll be surprised how immediate an impact this has.

3. Think about road position

All the other tips require you to be alert and aware of your road position. This helps you plan ahead and move gradually. It also means that more efficient driving is also safer driving.

4. The brake is a money burner

Where safe, allow yourself to slow naturally rather than hitting the brakes. When you press the brake you are essentially converting the energy you've paid to put into the car into heat. Instead, where you can, make the most of the car's momentum – good road positioning is crucial for this. Over the course of a journey if you brake frequently, you'll end up having to accelerate more too, which ultimately means using more fuel.

5. Listen to the noise of your engine

If you hear sharp acceleration and screeching brakes you know you're doing it wrong. Imagine driving from traffic light to traffic light doing that. The person behind who accelerates and decelerates more slowly will still be behind you at the next light – they'll just have spent far less getting there.

6. Keep moving if you can

The most expensive metre you drive is always the first one. It takes huge energy to get a car going. So if you can safely roll gradually up to a traffic light as it changes from red to green, without stopping, it is more efficient than stopping and restarting.
