West Virginia University is the parent organization of the nonprofit West Virginia University Health System, also known as WVUMedicine. It offers services in all of West Virginia and in parts of Maryland, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, the states that border it.

As a part of the university's medical center, West Virginia University established a tertiary care teaching hospital in 1960. The West Virginia Legislature approved the hospital's operations to be separated from the University and the creation of an independent corporate entity in 1984. By virtue of a transfer and lease agreement dated July 1, 1984, West Virginia University Hospitals, Inc. was established as a non-stock, non-profit corporation and took over management of the hospital. In addition to being West Virginia University's primary location for clinical education and research, the current 690-bed hospital functions as a significant regional and state health care referral center.

Built in 1960, the hospital's original building is now the WVU Health Sciences Building, which houses WVU's main academic teaching facility. The State of West Virginia is the owner of this facility. West Virginia University Hospitals, Inc. started building the J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in 1986. It is a ten-story, 500,000-square-foot (46,000-square-meter) building that opened for business in 1988.
