A healthy, beautiful smile looks good on anyone. It’s not all about how straight your teeth are or how bright your smile is, you can’t forget about your gums!
Here, KnowInsider mentions different ways to keep clean teeth and gums as well as important tips for preventing gum disease.
Brush at least two times a day
Brush your teeth after every meal. This helps remove the food and plaque trapped between your teeth and gums. Scrub your tongue too, since it can harbor bacteria. You can use an electric toothbrush or a regular one with soft bristles. Gently brush for 2 minutes. Moreover, clean between your teeth once a day. Your dentist may tell you to use an “inter-dental cleaner.”
Pick the right brush

Brushing can help in reducing plaque, as well as prevent and treat gum disease. Kimberly Harms, a dentist from Farmington, MN, says make sure your brush can cover the places that need covering. That’s everywhere you should be able to reach with a toothbrush. It can be a power toothbrush or a manual one. But there is one rule Harms says isn’t negotiable.
The size of the brush’s head is important, too, especially if you have a smaller mouth. Brushes also have various sizes of handles and different angles. Some are more flexible than others. You can consider a battery-powered or electric toothbrush. These can help reduce gingivitis and plaque more than manual brushing. Moreover, replace your old toothbrush every 3-4 months. Switch it out sooner if the bristles start to wer out.
Use fluoride toothpaste and water
Fluoride plays a key role in the health of your teeth because it helps prevent tooth decay by slowing the breakdown of enamel and increasing the rate of the remineralization process. Toothpastes containing fluoride help prevent cavities in both children and adults. T
o help strengthen weak spots and exposed roots, and to help prevent the early stages of tooth decay, brush regularly with a fluoridated toothpaste. At the same time, adding fluoride to your drinking water is one of the easiest and most cost-effective methods of protecting children and adults from tooth decay.
Use a therapeutic mouthwash

Therapeutic mouthwashes include ingredients that provide long-lasting bacterial reduction and can be used for conditions such as receding gums, gingivitis, dry mouth, and plaque buildup. Kids younger than 6 shouldn’t use mouthwash.
Rinsing your mouth with mouthwash that contains fluoride is another way to help protect you and your family from cavities.
Quit smoking
Smoking is one of the top factors that undermines clean teeth. You can go a long way toward having a healthy mouth if you avoid tobacco products. That includes not only cigarettes, but cigars, pipes, and chewing tobacco (chew/dip).
If you use tobacco products, it’s not too late to have a healthy mouth if you quit, or at least cut back. Studies have shown that smoking may contribute to gum disease by getting in the way when normal gum tissue cells try to do their job of maintaining a healthy mouth.
Eat right

Eating a balanced diet helps promote a healthy mouth, healthy teeth, and healthy gums. The American Dental Association recommends keeping between-meal snacks to a minimum to promote a healthy mouth.
If you do need a snack, some healthy mouth choices include raw veggies, plain yogurt, cheese, or a piece of fruit, such as an apple or pear.
