However, due to the new 12-team College Football Playoff format, two cherished Southern California traditions have been canceled.
The teams playing in this year's Rose Bowl will not visit Disneyland in Anaheim or go to Lawry’s the Prime Rib for the Beef Bowl, a friendly competition and joint meal at the Beverly Hills restaurant. Rose Bowl officials blame the new playoff structure for these changes.
The Rose Bowl Stadium has been the venue for this game since its opening in 1922. Since its last renovation, the facility has 69,747 seats. According to the organizers, tickets have already sold out, but if you want to attend, you will still find tickets on the secondary market. |
Previously, teams would arrive in Southern California about a week before the game to join these activities. This year, Ohio State and Oregon arrived just three days before kickoff. Rose Bowl spokesperson Karen Linhart confirmed that the schedule adjustments have cut out these famous trips.
Disneyland and Lawry’s have been part of the Rose Bowl for decades. Teams like Michigan State and UCLA visited Disneyland in 1955, just months after the park opened. Lawry’s Beef Bowl started in 1956 and has seen teams compete to eat the most prime rib, with Illinois setting a record in 2007 by consuming 870 pounds.
To keep its New Year’s Day time slot, the Rose Bowl has requested to stay as a quarterfinal game in the new playoff format. Despite this, the busy postseason schedule means the end of these traditional activities.
Instead of visiting iconic locations, the Buckeyes will get In-N-Out Burger meals at their hotel. Rose Bowl CEO David Eads acknowledged the changes, expressing a desire to showcase Southern California even if it’s just in a hotel ballroom.
