The 18th of June is International Picnic Day, and we're celebrating in a simple way: with a picnic! Picnics have been a part of most cultures for a long time. In fact, their popularity can be traced back to the French Revolution. Even though we all have different ideas about what a picnic is, it's a great way to spend the day with friends and family.
International Picnic Day: History
A lot of people around the world enjoy picnics as a break from their busy lives. But the picnic as we know it today didn't start until the French Revolution, when a lot of people could go to the parks together.
People say that the French invented modern picnics, but the fact that they are so popular today is really due to globalization and different cultures. In 2018, 55% of young Americans said their favorite thing to do in the summer was have a picnic.
People all over the world have started their own unique picnic traditions as the idea of picnics has spread. An interesting fact is that almost every culture in the world has its own unique way of having a picnic.
A picnic is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and all that your city has to offer. You'll be ready for a break and a tasty meal after a hike or walk.

The very thought of a picnic makes us think of easy and quick foods. Just think about wraps and rolls. These are some of the easiest snacks to make on the go, and the best part is that you only need a few things to make a roll. Your choice: the dish is so flexible that it can be made into either a fancy feast or a very simple, quick meal.
India's tandoori tikka rolls are different from Japan's seaweed-wrapped sushi and the Middle East's juicy chicken shawarmas. Each country has its own way of making the tasty wrap or roll.

Happy Birthday! There are lots of fun things that people can do to celebrate this day. You could use these creative ideas to celebrate, or you could make up your own:
Join an event for Picnic Day
To mark the event, charity events, school picnics, and all sorts of other group meals are set up. Check a website or community board to see if there are any picnics planned in your area. Pay special attention to parks or museums in your area that host these kinds of events often. If one is going on nearby, join in. It should be set up if it isn't already.
Take your own picnic for lunch or dinner.
Get on your bike, walk, or hike to a nearby scenic area and have a picnic today. You could also just bring your sandwiches and cold hard-boiled eggs to the garden and eat them outside. People who have to work during the day can go to a nearby park or grassy area during their lunch break.
Go to a different park.
Finding the best place for a picnic is a great reason to get out and see your city. There are likely hidden parks all around you that you haven't had the chance to visit yet. You might discover a new favorite!
Other ideas for piling foods into a picnic basket include:
Sandwiches: Perhaps the perfect picnic food, sandwiches make everything easy. Just pile some meat, cheese, and vegetables on a couple of pieces of bread. Add a few condiments, such as mustard or mayonnaise, and it’s a great start for a picnic.
Fruit: Most fruits come with their own natural packaging, making them the ideal food for a picnic. Grab some apples, oranges, bananas, or a giant watermelon to enjoy outside.
Side Dishes: Easy salads, potato chips, or a tray filled with veggies will make a picnic super tasty!
