Miss World Laos 'Misrepresenting Age': Unable to Hold the 'Crown'

Laos beauty Souphavady Phongsavanh made an announcement on her personal Facebook page:“I, Souphavandy Phongsavanh, Miss World Laos 2021, surrender my title as of today as I am unable to hold my position. I am unavailable to respond to questions at this time.”

Souphavady Phongsavanh, The Miss World 2021 representative from Laos has come under fire for allegedly misrepresenting her age in order to compete in the global pageant. A photograph of Souphavady’s government-issued identification card was leaked to social media, with her birth year listed as 1991, despite the contestant claiming to be only 26 years old. The global pageant maintains a strict age limit, as contestants must be between 17 to 26 years old before the entry date of the Miss World contest (which is usually 2 months prior to the coronation).

Social media users began to comment about Miss Souphavady’s age, saying she should be disqualified for being over the age limit required to enter the contest.

A user on social media mentioned, that the beauty had participated in a contest in 2007, when she was 16-years -old, by 2021 the actual age cannot be 26. Some even shared photos that were supposed to be Phongsavanh's identity cards, with the caption: "We understand it was your dream, but you deceived the whole country, so because of this, we will not support you.” In addition, some people revealed that Phongsavanh was born into a wealthy and powerful family, so she may have asked her family to win the beauty award.

The angry and disappointed fans have asked the organization to remove the diva from the given title and either the first runner-up to be appointed or someone else. Phonvilai Luanglath was adjudged as the first runner-up while Aliya Inthavong was adjudged as the second runner-up at the end of the event finale.

Meanwhile, the president of the Miss World Laos 2021 competition, Saykeo Sidavong, has explained on the Miss World Laos 2021 page that the contest authorities are aware of the problem and have spoken with the relevant parties to find a solution. Saykeo Sidavong released a statement, that said that they had no intention of ignoring the incident and asked the public to give this unit 14 days for Phongsavanh Souphavady to prove her true age, to clarify the allegations aimed at her. The organization also said that if the new beauty does not clearly explain everything and prove that the accusations from netizens are false, they are ready to handle her by stripping her crown, title and finding a replacement.

The judges have now given Miss World Laos 2021 two weeks to provide evidence of her claims, said the president of the Miss World Laos 2021 content.

The first line was followed by a folding-hands and sad face emoji.

“I apologise to the contest management and panel of judges who had entrusted this title to me. I thank all the people who sent me messages of support.”

Miss Souphavady Phongsavanh is originally from Savannakhet Province but currently resides in Vientiane Capital. She studied at NUS Business School, National University of Singapore, and holds an honors degree in accountancy and financial accounting from the University of Portsmouth.
