What is the Miami Open Tennis?

This Miami Open tennis tournament is typically played right after the Indian Wells and it generally sums up the high octane tennis action in the United States for the first half of the year. In 2021, however, the Indian Wells Open was postponed and the Miami Open was played in the third week of March. Considering the fact that the stakes here are the same as that in Indian Wells, the tournament is attended by a lot of star players from men’s and women’s half. But apart from the high quality tennis games, the Miami Masters is also known for its gruelling conditions in the form of extreme heat and humidity. Over the years, many players have succumbed to such harsh conditions, while many have overcome them in great style.

2021 Miami Open Semi-Final – Ashleigh Barty vs Elina Svitolina Preview & Prediction

World number one Ash Barty made the semi-finals of the Miami Open after winning a deciding set against her second-successive Belarusian, beating Aryna Sabalenka on Tuesday and Victoria Azarenka the day before in two exciting matches.

The Aussie has coped well with being pegged back to win deciders and that could come into focus again in this semi-final clash with world number five Elina Svitolina.

The 26-year-old from Ukraine has had the better of the six previous meetings with Barty over the years and won the first five before Barty claimed her first win in their most recent match back in 2019. Svitolina has been near her best this fortnight in Miami, with a round of 16 defeat of Petra Kvitova looking particularly impressive, but despite her excellent 5-1 record over Barty, she comes into this match as the underdog.

Barty’s current strength versus the unbalanced record and Svitolina’s form in Miami makes this result a little murkier than it should be, though. Three sets should be required to separate the two before a decider is called and it could be worth leaving a winner out of this pick. If pushed, world number one Barty should find her extra mojo at the last to edge through.

Ashleigh Barty vs Elina Svitolina head-to-head

Elina Svitolina leads Ashleigh Barty 5-1 in the head-to-head rivalry.

Svitolina beat the Australian five times in a row before Barty finally pulled one back at the 2019 WTA Finals. The two also faced each other in Miami three years ago, with Svitolina winning 7-5, 6-4.

Ashleigh Barty vs Elina Svitolina prediction

On current form, Ashleigh Barty should be the favorite to make it to the final of the Miami Open.

The former French Open champion has the better service and also boasts of more variety on the return. Besides, Barty can generate power of her own and strike effortless winners from the baseline, which could come in handy against Svitolina's counterpunching style.

The Ukrainian has certainly proven to be a tough nut to crack in the past week, and she could ask a few questions of Barty on Thursday. But the World No. 1 has been in immaculate touch over the last couple of matches and should be expected to emerge victorious against Svitolina.
