Italy vs Spain - Preview
Italy knocked out one of the pre-tournament favourites Belgium to progress through to the semi-finals, claiming a narrow 2-1 win in what was a very close and competitive 90-minutes. Spain were taken all the way to penalties by 10-man Switzerland in the quarter-finals and one wonders what kind of condition their players must be in after going through back-to-back periods of extra time.
Italy set up a Euro 2020 semi-final clash against Spain after first half goals from Nicolo Barella and Lorenzo Insigne led the Azzurri to a 2-1 win over Belgium in an entertaining encounter in which both sides created a number of chances.
Italians to face Spain in Euro semifinal |
Roberto Mancini's Italy have stormed their way through until this point, winning each of their three group games, beating Austria in extra time and sending the No.1 ranked side in the world - Belgium - packing in the quarter-finals.
Locatelli showed his talent in the group stage, and that he has been kept out of the starting XI in the knockout rounds shows just how strong Italy's midfield is.
Beyond being tidy in possession, they press relentlessly and have bundles of energy that few players in Europe could match. Spain will need to be at their best if they are to nullify and overcome Italy's midfield.
Then there's Ciro Immobile, Federico Chiesa and Domenico Berardi. Immobile was the European Golden Boot winner in 2019/20, Chiesa is one of Europe's hottest prospects and a nightmare to come up against, while Sassuolo's Berardi is one of the more lesser-sung talents in the squad but is just as dangerous on his day.

Italy vs Spain - Predictions
Italy are the bookmaker's favourites as things stand.
Italy will be buoyed by their victory over Belgium, an opponent that was always going to test them in attack as well as in defence. Roberto Mancini is probably going to make a couple of changes to his starting eleven for the semi-final, following the injury to Spinazzola who looks set to miss the rest of the tournament. The Roma full-back has been one of Italy's key players both in defence and going forward and he will be missed in the semi-final.
Spain were taken to extra time for the second game running and this time they needed penalties to earn their place in the semi-final. Luis Enrique's side could and should have won the game within the 90-minutes after they created a number of clearcut chances and failed to covert any of them. This ability to create goals has helped Spain progress through Euro 2020 but they are going to have to be more economical in front of goal if they want to outscore Italy.
Spain were back to their toothless best against Switzerland, scrapping past them on penalties after missing a host of chances, and coming up against an inspired Yann Sommer.
Italy, on the other hand, were pushed all the way by Belgium but still looked a fearsome threat.
There’s only one winner in my eyes and the Azzurri should wrap it up in normal time, 3-1.

Italy are undefeated in the tournament so far. They have set a new record for the longest run of victories in the competition, qualifying included.
Italy -- who will face the Spaniards on Tuesday in London -- opened the scoring in the 31st minute when Barella picked up the ball, forced his way past defenders in the area and fired home. Insigne doubled the lead in the 44th minute after collecting the ball on the left and skipping beyond a defender before unleashing a long-range shot that flew past Thibaut Courtois. Romelu Lukaku clawed a goal back for Belgium from the penalty spot just before the break after Giovanni Di Lorenzo put an arm on Jeremy Doku and pushed him to the ground.

Full Time: Italy 2-1 Belgium
Final whistle. A Barello goal and a wonder goal from Insigne takes a rampaging Italy across the semi hurdle. They will meet Spain in the semifinals. Belgium's Golden Generation's luckless run in big tournaments continue.
5 minutes added time
The ninety minutes are up. Belgium still struggling to find a clear sight on goal. Five minutes are added on. De Bruyne's free kick in the first minute of injury time, like so many of his balls, ends up being cleared away. Donnarumma lies prostrate with an apparent injury as time runs out of Belgium.
72' - Belgium make attacking changes
Insigne tests the keeper with a long ranger. Belgium bring on Nacer Chadli and Dries Mertens in place of Meunier and Tielemans. What an introduction! Dries Mertens cuts open the italian defence to create a chance but again Belgium miss out by inches! Lukaku, Hazard, Chadli, all within agaonizing inches of getting the equalizer.
66' - Italy attack in waves
Doku runs like lightning on the left flank, leading to a splitting pass from De Bruyne, but Lukaku cannot turn the shot in. A big chance goes abegging for Belgium at the hour mark. Italy attack in waves again. All hands on deck for Belgium. A dazzling move by the Azzuri is put just past the goal by Spinazzola.
2nd Half: Italy start brightly
2nd half begins. Can Belgium roar back? Or will Italy keep ther discipline? They begin the 2nd half by keeping the ball for a long spell before a shot from Chiesa drifts wide. Italy have started the 2nd half as brightly as they played in the 1st.
Half Time: Italy lead Belgium 2-1
Oh! Penalty at the other end! Doku is felled in the box. Lukaku steps in and slots it home. Belgium have a way back at Half-Time. It;s Italy who lead 2-1, but Belgium, having scored at the stroke of half-time, have momentum on their end.
