"Friendship is the only cement that will ever hold the world together." – Woodrow Wilson

One of the best things about life is having friends, and we don't need a special day to celebrate that. We love our friends every day.

But every year on August 4 (or July 30, February 14, and other dates), people all over the world celebrate International Friendship Day/World Friendship Day. This is a great time for friends to show each other love and care. Today is a special day for all of their friends to celebrate their special bond and how it has made their lives better by bringing them so much love and joy.

The Origins of the Frienship Day

But International Day of Friendship has been around for a lot longer than that. When Hallmark started this in 1919, the idea was that people would send cards to each other to celebrate their friendship. But the market had dried up by 1940, and it eventually went away for good.

The World Friendship Crusade was the first to suggest an international party. In 1958, Dr. Ramón Artemio Bracho and some friends started this group in Puerto Pinasco, Paraguay. They believed in the power of friendship and how important it was to build a peaceful society. Also that same year, they chose to have Friendship Week in Puerto Pinasco and other parts of Paraguay.

But (believe it or not!) Winnie the Pooh was named the world's Ambassador of Friendship at the United Nations in 1998. And in April 2011, the UN officially named July 30th as International Friendship Day, even though many countries celebrate it on August 1st.

The next year, they did it again, and this time, they ended on July 30, which they named Friendship Day. Celebrations of friendship grew and spread across the Americas and then the world. In 2011, the UN made November 1 an International Day of Friendship.

International Friendship Day: Different Dates Around the World

There are more days than just July 30th that people all over the world celebrate friendship. Some places, like Paraguay, also celebrate on July 30, but other places have different dates.

In some places, like India and the US, Friend's Day is on the first Sunday in August, while in others, it's on Wednesday, July 20.

Valentine's Day and Friendship Day are both on February 14, which is also Friendship Day in Finland and Estonia.

Interestingly, February 14 is Friendship Day in a number of countries, such as Mexico and Ecuador. Singaporeans celebrate Friendship Day every April 3rd week.

International Friendship Day: Meanings

The declaration for International Friendship Day says that everyone should "celebrate this day in a way that is appropriate for their local, national, and regional communities, taking into account their culture and other appropriate circumstances or customs, including through educational and public awareness-raising activities."

Friendship is a power that can reach people from all over the world and all kinds of cultures. International Day of Friendship is all about encouraging people to be kind and get along with each other.
