New Guinness record: Northeastern Minnesota family is world's tallest

The Guiness World Records say the Trapp family of Esko (Northeastern Minnesota, USA) has achieved the title with an average height of six feet, eight inches tall.

Watching the Trapp kids play basketball and volleyball in the previous decade, Carlton County residents knew Esko's Trapp family was extraordinarily tall. Now the world knows. As announced by the family on social media only last week, Guinness World Records has declared the Trapp family of five is the tallest in the world.

Because of processing times at Guinness World Records, the Trapps waited over a year for the confirmation of the record, but had already reaped many benefits from their heights. The family is extremely proud to be officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the tallest family in the world.

The most diminutive of the quintet, mother Kristine, still stands at a robust 6 feet, 3 inches tall. “I love saying I’m the shortest person in the world’s tallest family,” she said.

“We tease our mom (Krissy Trapp) because she’s only 6 feet, 3.5 inches, like, ‘You’re bringing down the family average, Mom!’ ” Trapp-Blanchfield said. “And she’s like, ‘None of you would even be here without me, so you’re welcome for your world record.’ ”

From there, the remaining family members’ heights are:

Scott Trapp, father: 6 feet, 8 inches Savanna Trapp, daughter: 6 feet, 8.1 inches Molly Steede, daughter: 6 feet, 6 inches Adam Trapp, son: 7 feet, 3 inches According to Guinness, Savanna Trapp has been recruited by UCLA to play — give you one guess — Division I basketball.

The Trapps value being able to live ordinary lives, despite now being world-record holders. Scott works for the city of Duluth; Krissy is a certified nursing assistant; Savanna works in social services; Molly is a second-grade teacher in Duluth; and Adam expects to graduate from college in May with a degree in biomedical engineering.

Adam Trapp also played basketball in high school, whereas Steede played volleyball in college, and was likely great at blocking.

The Trapp kids said their parents always raised them to consider their height a blessing, and to be proud of who they are.

“If everybody’s looking at us, we want to make sure we’re setting a good example,” Steede said.

Steede, whose husband, Dalton, is 6 feet, 9 inches tall, said she hopes to raise a tall family of her own someday. The Trapp siblings said that growing up, they always had a supportive community in their parents and siblings who understood what it was like to be taller than average.

"I don't feel that tall because I'm not the tallest in the family," Kristine Trapp says in a video introducing the family. Each member is wearing a cheeky shirt that says "Minnesota Grown."

All three Trapp kids played sports at Esko High School. Adam Trapp played basketball and intended to continue at South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in Rapid City but was sidelined with a knee injury. He will graduate with a degree in biomedical engineering in May.

Steede signed on to play Division I at South Dakota State University, but pivoted to the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Savanna Trapp, recruited to play Division I basketball at UCLA, had to cut her career short because of concussions.

She has hit her head on doorframes, ceiling fans and lights, she said.

Steps, too, are tricky. They aren't made for big feet, Savanna Trapp said. Fashionable shoes wouldn't be either, if not for performers.

For Steede, a second-grade teacher in Duluth, it's the pants that are a problem.

Adam Trapp said this all started with his sister Savanna, who had scouted out the former Guinness World Record holder — a family from the Netherlands with an average height of 6 feet 7.2 inches. She did the math and knew the Trapps could easily top them. Each member of the Trapp family was measured by a local doctor, the paperwork was submitted to Guinness, and they found out earlier this year that they had secured the title.

Krissy Trapp has been a “superstar” at online shopping, Steede said, and would order everyone custom clothing to make sure it fit. Adam also received size 21 shoe donations from friends in the National Basketball Association that he met while playing basketball for the Amateur Athletic Union.

Adam Trapp described the close-knit Trapp family as goofy. The kids were homeschooled until high school and most nights they ate dinner together. They enjoy campfires and old stories and playing cards.
