Since the Google Pixel 4a was launched in early August 2020, later than we'd expected, its successor, the Google Pixel 5a, probably won't be here any time soon. We're still excited for the next affordable Pixel phone though, and we've now heard some rumors of the upcoming handset.
The Pixel 4a was quickly followed up by the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5, rounding off the company's contingent of 2020 smartphones. But now that the dust has settled, we have to ask: what’s coming in the Google Pixel 5a, the rumored affordable take on the Pixel 5?
Until then, we can look at what the Pixel 4a didn’t incorporate and list which features we would be truly excited to see in its successor. Read on for the few rumors we’ve already heard, along with what we want to see in the Pixel 5a:
Google Pixel 5a release date
Last week, a rumor suggested a new Google phone was coming in June, with all signs pointing to a Pixel 5a launch. That date seems more solid than ever now that a prominent phone leaker has "confirmed" a June 11 launch, as cited by Tom's Guide.
The initial leak of a June 11 Google phone launch came from Jon Prosser, who's fairly reliable when it comes to leaks surrounding Google phones. Prosser didn't mention a phone by name, though it was widely assumed he was talking about the Pixel 5a, as Google's budget phone lineup is due for an update.

Now Prosser is back on Twitter, tweeting that his source had confirmed a June 11 launch date. And this time, the Pixel 5a is specifically mentioned by name.

Google Pixel 5a news and rumors
The first rumor we heard...is that the Google Pixel 5a exists. Really! A supposedly official document listed the Pixel 5a by name, along with codenames for what we expect are future Pixel phones – including the Google Pixel 6 and 6 XL, as well as what could be the rumored Google foldable phone.

We've heard a second info-dump, but it tells us of even fewer new features than the first rumors. According to renders and feature leaks, the Google Pixel 5a will be near-identical to the Pixel 4a 5G with the same design, screen specs, and cameras, Tech Radar cites. Google likely wouldn't put out the same phone twice though, so presumably, there's more we have to learn.
New Google Pixel Buds could launch in AprilThe next Google Pixel Buds could launch very soon, according to tipster Jon Prosser, who tweeted that the brand will release new wireless earbuds in April. Prosser, who has often been proven right in his predictions, also alleges that they'll be joined soon after by a new Google phone on June 11: The true wireless Google Pixel Buds (2020) launched last year, cutting the cable on the brand's original neck buds. These new Pixel Buds will presumably improve on the company's last wireless earbuds – in fact, they'll have to if Google wants to compete with popular models like the Apple AirPods Pro and the Sony WF-1000XM3. |
