To note, Google was founded on September 4, 1988. For the initial seven years, Google observed its birthday on this date. But later, Google shifted its birthday to today, September 27, to coincide with the announcement of the record number of pages that this search engine was indexing. Since then, Google has been celebrating September 27 as its birthday, and now it's been 23 years.

Google first celebrated its birthday on September 7 in 2005. This was followed by Google's birthday on September 8 and September 26. The first Birthday Doodle was released on September 27, 2002 when Google was celebrating its 4th Birthday. Google celebrated its 5th Birthday on September 8, 2003, the 6th birthday was celebrated on September 7, 2004, and the 7th Google Birthday Doodle was released on September 26, 2005. Finally, Google chose September 27 and this has been Google’s Birthday date since 2006. So don’t get confused between its foundation and birthday.

Google’s first iteration was named “BackRub”

Brin and Page’s fascination with word play started in 1995, when they launched a project called “BackRub”

It was a search engine that stemmed from Page’s curiosity with backlinks, or the how one web page links to any other web page (for example, the same way a bibliography “links” one piece of work to many other pieces of work). In 1997, they renamed their search engine Google, “a play on the mathematical expression for the number 1 followed by 100 zeros,” the company says, reflecting their mission to organize the world’s information.

The name “Google" is actually a wordplay on the mathematical term ‘googol’ which is represented by the number 1 followed by hundred zeroes. The name was chosen because the founders wanted to organise a “seemingly infinite amount of information on the web.”

Founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page, who met by chance, had initially christened the search engine BackRub. In case, you are wondering why, it is believed that “BackRub” was nothing but a nod to retrieving backlinks – Page and Brin’s original research project.
