What is National Girlfriends Day: Meaning

National Girlfriends Day commemorates the unique and meaningful connection among females, be it siblings, parents, colleagues, or peers. These relationships often develop into close friendships. Girlfriends derive pleasure from engaging in activities together, such as laughing in unison or confiding in each other. Girlfriends provide support and companionship during both difficult times and moments of joy.

According to Merriam-Webster, the term "girlfriend" was initially documented in 1859. Initially, it was defined as companions who are female. During the vibrant 1920s, the term "dating" gained popularity and soon after, "girlfriend" acquired an additional connotation referring to a romantic relationship between a boyfriend and a girlfriend.

Even now, the term "girlfriend" retains its dual connotations, referring to either a non-romantic relationship between girls or a romantic partner.

National Girlfriend Day fundamentally acknowledges the invaluable worth of female friendships. These relationships frequently function as a foundation of emotional support, a constant source of amusement, and a secure environment for expressing vulnerability. Our girlfriends are our steadfast companions, supporting us through life's triumphs and tribulations, providing not only emotional solace but also joining us in exhilarating escapades.

This occasion promotes women to pause and contemplate upon as well as commemorate these crucial connections. Today is an opportunity to show appreciation, reinforce relationships, and possibly reconnect with friends we have lost contact with.

Examples of Powerful Female Friendships

The Edinburgh Seven, a collective of women in the 1860s, vigorously advocated for the opportunity to pursue medical education in the United Kingdom, thereby establishing a path for subsequent cohorts of female physicians.

Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton were influential individuals in the initial women's rights movement in the United States, dedicating their efforts to advocating for women's right to vote.

Marilyn Monroe leveraged her influential status to propel Ella Fitzgerald's career, exemplifying the profound influence of women supporting one another in the entertainment sector.

Who created this day?

National Girlfriends Day was created in 2006 by Allie Savarino Kline and Sally Rodgers. The ladies also created a website that no longer exists (Sisterwoman.com).

History of National Girlfriend Day

National Girlfriend Day is August 1. No one is sure who came up with the idea, but Mistress Susan, who runs a luxury website, seems to have the strongest case. She says she made the date and celebrated it in 2004 so that gal pals could show their appreciation for each other.

Being friends with other women has a history that goes back much further than today. Since girls have been friends for so long, we can't find the first female friends. Instead, we'll talk about some of the most famous female friends from the last few decades.

A group of seven women friends fought to be the first women in the UK to go to medical school in the 1860s. They were known as the Edinburgh Seven. Even though they were studying medicine at Edinburgh University, they were not allowed to graduate and become doctors. Because they were so determined, women's rights were put on the national agenda. In 1876, laws were passed that let women study medicine at the college level. It was made possible for women to become doctors after the Edinburgh Seven.

At about the same time, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony were becoming friends, which would lead to a revolutionary friendship. In the United States, they started the women's rights movement and were the first people to fight for white women's right to vote. It was in 1869 that they came together to start the National Woman Suffrage Association, after meeting for the first time in 1851.

On a more sporting note, we'd like to honor The Rockford Peaches, who were among the first teams to play in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in the 1940s. The things they did were a huge step forward for American women athletes.

One of our favorite stories about female friendship is about Ella Fitzgerald and Marilyn Monroe. Fitzgerald said that Monroe gave her her big break. The singer went to the Mocambo in Hollywood in 1955 to book a show, but the manager turned her down because she didn't have enough "sex appeal." Monroe called the manager and told him that if Fitzgerald got the job, she would sit in the front row every night. This would get the manager the press and crowds he was looking for. Fitzgerald would say in the end. "I never had to play in a small jazz club again after that."

These days, Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert proved that even fierce rivals can become best friends. In the 1970s and 1980s, they played each other in an amazing 61 tennis tournament finals. But they were still best friends off the court and would often travel to tournaments together and hang out between games.

Friends who are women are always there for each other and have done great things together by going against the grain. Spend some time with your girlfriends on National Girlfriend Day 2023 and tell them how much you value them.
