As residents of a world-class city, we are all aware that Singaporean living can be expensive. But the majority of us can change our ways, choosing more cost-effective options and living within our means.
But what about when we pass away? Can our funeral rites in this pricey city reflect our way of life, which was modest and dignified?
Fortunately, the response is yes.
Step-by-Step Guide: What To Do When Someone Passes Away
There are different steps to take depending on where the death occurred—in a hospital, at home, or abroad.
What to do if someone dies in a hospital or at home
Step 1: Obtain Certificate of Cause of Death (CCOD) in the hospital
The doctor at the hospital will complete the Certificate of Cause of Death (CCOD) if the cause of death can be verified and the cause is natural.
To certify the death, get in touch with the physician or any nearby physician who is willing to make a house call.
The rest of the steps are similar
If the cause of death unknown
If the doctor is unable to certify the cause of death, call the police to have the body sent to Mortuary@HSA (Singapore General Hospital, Block 9)
Step 2: Contact a funeral director
Call the appropriate Funeral Director if one has already been designated. The family will have to hire one if not.
The body will be collected by the funeral director, embalmed, and then delivered to the wake location.
Step 3: Register the death
The family can register the death at any Police station or the Registry of Births and Deaths.

How much does a funeral services typically costs - Burial or Cremation in Singapore
The length of the event and the deceased's religion are the two main factors that affect the overall cost of a funeral ceremony in Singapore. The overall cost increases with the length of the funeral service.
A funeral ceremony typically consists of a location, the proper decorations, a casket, chairs and tables, lighting, fans, and flowers.
religious funerals may cost more because they require special supplies and personnel to be used in the ceremony. Choose a funeral service without a funeral director to save money, but be ready to do all the work yourself—from getting a funeral permit to finding a coffin, flowers, and decorations.
In any case, the average price of funeral services in Singapore, broken down by religion, is as follows:
Funeral Type | Average Cost |
---|---|
Christian | From $4,500 – $5,900 |
Catholic | From $4,500 – $5,900 |
Buddhist | From $5,600 – $7,300 |

Non Religious | From $4,000 – $6,000 |
After the good-byes, you have to decide what to do with the remains of your loved one – land burial, sea burial or cremation.
Burial (land)
There is currently only one cemetery available in Choa Chu Kang as Singapore is running out of land. There is a 15-year maximum for the burial period. The remains must then be cremated or reburied after that. Because of this, few people opt for burial unless it is required by their religion.
For a Muslim, Parsi, or Baha'i burial, you would have to pay about $315. For a burial that is Christian, Chinese, or Hindu, the cost jumps sharply to $940.
Burial (sea)
The remains could be dispersed in the ocean. Between 7 am and 7 pm, you can do this 2.8 km south of Pualu Semakau. You can get assistance with this from the MPA's Port Marine Safety Control Centre.
As an alternative to wrapping the remains in a red or white cloth, scattering tubes are now available and start at $200. Even biodegradable urns that can be dumped into the sea without harming the environment are available (starting at $175). They are made from recycled paper and paper clay. In order to give families time to say their final goodbyes, these are made to float for about 20 minutes before sinking.
A sea burial might have less of an impact on the environment than a cremation. Additionally, it is significantly less expensive than a burial or cremation (since you must pay for the urn's storage at a columbarium). And subsequent generations are not required to maintain the niche. There is nowhere you can go to visit your loved one, which is a drawback.
The price of a sea burial can range from $80 to more than $1,000, depending on how elaborate the ceremony is.
Cremation
Singapore has three crematoriums: the government-run Mandai Crematorium, the privately-run Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery, and the privately-run Tse Toh Aum Temple.
In order to store the cremated remains, you will need an urn, a niche in a columbarium, and a marble plaque with your personal information engraved on it to cover the niche. There is nothing stopping you from keeping the urn at home, but doing so will require future generations to take care of it or at the very least, store it.
Most people decide to have the urns buried at one of the nearly 60 private or three government-run cemeteries. Although a government columbarium is less expensive, you cannot select your niche.
Item | Expected cost |
Cremation | $100 (government) / $321 to $535 (private) |
Urn | From $70 (average $250) |
Niche | $500 single niche to $900 family niche (government) / from $1,100 to $5,800 and up for a single niche (private) |
Marble plaque | From $1,000 |
Remembering the departed
If turning your grandpa into a tree is a little too “progressive” for your family to accept, there are several more acceptable ways you can remember the departed, from traditional columbariums to obituaries, and even turning them into personal jewellery.
Item | Cost |
Columbarium | Marble plaque: S$1,000 and up Urn: S$200 to S$300 Niche: Govt: S$500 (Single), S$900 (Family)Private: S$1,100 and up (Single) |
Obituary | Print: S$20 to S$63 per col cm Colour surcharges apply Online: S$250 per year |
Keepsakes | Ash lockets: From S$250 Eternity gemstones: From S$1,700 Memorial diamonds: From S$4,588 (uncut) to S$6,399 (cut and polished) |

Lasting Power of Attorney | S$75 to S$200 (excludes legal and medical fees) |
Advanced Medical Directive | S$40 |
What To Do If The Family Cannot Afford The Funeral?Generally, you can bargain with the funeral director for a lower price or a deferred payment schedule. If you are unable to pay the full amount, some funeral service providers do offer payment plans. The deceased's non-nominated CPF funds may be used to pay up to $6,000 in funeral expenses if they have CPF funds but they were not used for a nomination. In order to do so, you would need to submit an application to the Public Trustee's Office and gather the necessary paperwork: -NRIC or passport of the person claiming, and the applicant -Death certificate of the deceased If the person claiming the reimbursement is: -the husband or wife of the deceased – the marriage certificate -the child of the deceased – the birth certificate of the child and marriage certificate of parents -the parent of the deceased – the birth certificate of the deceased and marriage certificate of parents -the brother or sister of the deceased – the birth certificate of the deceased, marriage certificate of parents and the birth certificate of the brother or sister Form for declaring funeral reimbursement (found on the PTO website) a duplicate of the first page of the bank statement or passbook. (Note: The beneficiary and the account holder(s) must both sign the indemnity form for a payment request to a joint bank account or third party bank account.) Funeral expense receipts. In the event that you are not a beneficiary, you must submit these. Once all necessary documents have been submitted, the claim processing typically takes one month. |
