Saw his first concert when he was in the fifth grade—the glam-metal band Warrant.

On Feb. 22, Levine sang Gregg Alexander and Danielle Brisebois' best original song Oscar nominee "Lost Stars," which was featured in John Carney's music-centric drama Begin Again in which Levine starred and sang it.

His larger role in Begin Again, my favorite film of 2014, still amazes him. John Carney's faith in me was huge because I'd never acted before. He randomly asked me if I wanted to act. I told him I wasn't until he called." Levine said he quickly decided, "This seems like the best movie to make in my lifetime. Not sure where it goes from here, but that was my part. I truly believe that and am grateful for its arrival."

His desire to sing Alexander-co-written songs was more important. He exclaimed, "I've followed Gregg Alexander's career forever, and he's brilliant. I knew his potential was great." He added, "I remember hearing the 1999 New Radicals album. Nearly a bubble existed." Alexander said his songs have a rare quality: "Never sound 'decade-appropriate.' Always sound timeless. I can't tell if that New Radicals record is from the 1980s, 1990s, late 1970s, or 2000s. His writing style and talent are timeless." Also, "People don't realize how many songs he's written. So many songwriters and current artists are influenced by him. The current Maroon 5 song "Sugar" sounds like Gregg Alexander.
