Although written and recorded in 1980, the English-language version of the song was not released as a single in Europe until 1999 and charted at no. 34 in Sweden, no. 15 in the Netherlands,no. 75 in Germany,to promote the CD re-release of many of ABBA's singles.
Lyrics "Happy New Year"
No more champagne
And the fireworks are through
Here we are, me and you
Feeling lost and feeling blue
It's the end of the party
And the morning seems so grey
So unlike yesterday
Now's the time for us to say
Happy New Year
Happy New Year
May we all have a vision now and then
Of a world where every neighbor is a friend
Happy New Year
Happy New Year
May we all have our hopes, our will to try
If we don't we might as well lay down and die
You and I
Sometimes I see
How the brave new world arrives
And I see how it thrives
In the ashes of our lives
Oh yes, man is a fool
And he thinks he'll be okay
Dragging on, feet of clay
Never knowing he's astray
Keeps on going anyway
Happy New Year
Happy New Year
May we all have a vision now and then
Of a world where every neighbor is a friend
Happy New Year
Happy New Year
May we all have our hopes, our will to try
If we don't we might as well lay down and die
You and I
Seems to me now
That the dreams we had before
Are all dead, nothing more
Than confetti on the floor
It's the end of a decade
In another ten years time
Who can say what we'll find
What lies waiting down the line
In the end of eighty-nine
Happy New Year
Happy New Year
May we all have a vision now and then
Of a world where every neighbor is a friend
Happy New Year
Happy New Year
May we all have our hopes, our will to try
If we don't we might as well lay down and die
You and I

ABBA, the Swedish Europop group that was among the most commercially successful groups in the history of popular music. In the 1970s it dominated the European charts with its catchy pop songs. Members included songwriter and keyboard player Benny Andersson, songwriter and guitarist Björn Ulvaeus, and vocalists Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad.
While ABBA produced an impressive number of hit singles, some of their most notable chart-topping songs are “Dancing Queen” (1976), “Super Trouper” (1980), and “Knowing Me, Knowing You” (1977). “Dancing Queen” stands apart for its induction into the Recording Academy’s Grammy Hall of Fame in 2015.
Meaning of the song
In this song, ABBA wishes a Happy New Year to everyone. In the “meat” of the song (the chorus), the narrator ( Agnetha Fältskog ) hopes that in the New Year, the world would be a better place – a beautiful place “where every neighbor is a friend”.
In reality, the lyrics were not that cheerful:
No more champagne
And the fireworks are through
Here we are, me and you
Feeling lost and feeling blue
It's the end of the party
And the morning seems so grey
The English version was only released many years later. So the sorrow of the lyrics went mostly unnoticed. But it contained a hint of disappointment with ideals of brotherhood and love. “May we all have a vision now and then, of a world where every neighbor is a friend […] “may we all have our hopes, our will to try if we don't we might as well lay down and die.”
“Happy New Year!” is about the shared hope for a better world, against the odds, even if we are “feeling lost and feeling blue”. Which is what we all wish when we say “Happy New Year”, with a bittersweet smile on our faces. |
