FC Barcelona Fixtures 2021/22: Full Match Schedule, El Clasico Date & Time

Barcelona financial crisis: ‘Can’t register’ Aguero, Memphis, Garcia & Emerson

Barcelona’s finances are in such a mess that the club reportedly can’t even register new signings Memphis Depay, Eric Garcia, Sergio Aguero, and Emerson yet. The same goes for Lionel Messi and his new two-year contract.

The latest update comes from Rubén Uría and Adrià Soldevila at Goal Espana who’ve had an in-depth look at Barca’s finances and found some “disturbing” results. The report even describes the club’s finances as “a horror movie.”

Barca now need to cut the wage bill by €200 million to comply with La Liga’s salary cap and be able to register the new signings. Konrad de la Fuente, Jean-Clair Todibo, Francisco Trincao have all gone, Junior Firpo will be next, but more departures are needed with “extreme urgency.”

Three players that the Catalans are desperate to get rid of are Samuel Umtiti, Miralem Pjanic, and Philippe Coutinho. However, the club is struggling to find any takers because of their huge wages.

There’s also another problem too. Offloading the trio would also only cut €64 million off the wage bill which, added to the recent departures of Konrad, Todibo, Trincao, Junior & Matheus, would only make a total of saving of €89.7m. That would still not be enough, as only 25% could be reinvested in new signings and registrations to comply with La Liga rules.

All of which means more players may need to go. There are already whispers that Barca are willing to sell Antoine Griezmann, while those rumors about PSG and Manchester City being keen on Messi seem to be on the way back.

FC Barcelona 2021-22: Full Fixtues and Match Schedules

FC Barcelona ended the 2020/21 season with mixed results. Some fans were happy with the team’s development, and some left disappointed after winning the league. A 3rd place finish is surely not good enough given their position towards the back-end of the season.

With the 2021/22 La Liga season set to commence in August, let us look at FC Barcelona’s fixtures and important match-days.

When do FC Barcelona play their first game - opening day La Liga?

Barcelona will start off their 2021/22 La Liga campaign at Camp Nou against Real Sociedad on August 15. Ronald Koeman and his players will look forward to put last season behind them and get off to a positive start. Real Sociedad will be a tough opponent, even though the Catalan side managed to complete the league double over them in a convincing fashion.

After the opening fixture, Barcelona will travel to San Mames. A gap of 7 days between both the fixtures. The opening two fixtures can shape the whole season for Barcelona, 2 tough opponents followed by Getafe, Sevilla and Granada.

The Key Dates in the 2021-22 calendar for Barcelona

October will be the month to look forward to for La Liga and football fans. Barcelona will go against the top teams, which can decide how the table will look after 1st half of the season. They start off at Wanda Metropolitano on 3rd October 2021.

Start of the season

The 2021/22 season will begin, as usual since the Spanish Super Cup is no longer played in the summer, with the league championship. The competition will begin on the weekend of August 14 and 15, as chosen by the RFEF and LaLiga, with the mediation of the CSD. The calendar will show who Barça's first opponents are, as well as when the Clásicos will be played, the derbies against Espanyol and matches against Atlético Madrid and Sevilla, amongst others.

The Catalans usually start the league campaign with a victory, and apart from the 2019 defeat against Athletic Club, the last loss on the first day of the league season was 13 years ago, in 2008, against Numancia. The rest were all wins (11 from 13).

As for last year, Ronald Koeman's men started the season with a great victory at the Camp Nou against Villarreal (4-0).

End of the season

As for the last day, the league has not yet reported on the exact final day of the championship, but as usual, all indications are that it will sometime in May. We hope to be able to be celebrating a new league title which would be the 27th in our history!

The Champions League

In the absence of the preliminary rounds in the summer to finalise all the teams that will play in the Champions League, UEFA have already announced the dates for the 2021/22 Champions League. Please note that the draw for the group stage will take place on August 26:

28 and 29 September 2021: Second match

19 and 20 October 2021: Third match

2 and 3 November 2021: Fourth match

23 and 24 November 2021: Fifth match

7 and 8 December 2021: Sixth match

Knockout stage:

15/16/22/23 February and 8/9/15/16 March 2022: Round of 16

5/6 and 12/13 April 2022: Quarter-finals

26/27 April and 3/4 May 2022: Semifinals

28 May 2022: Final (Saint Petersburg Stadium)

Christmas break, but not New Year's Eve

Another important point that has been announced is that there will be a league matchday on December 22nd and 23rd, but no matches will be played on December 24th, 25th and 26th. Therefore, with the Christmas break, it means there will be up to three games played on Dec. 31, and Barça could end up playing on this New Year’s Eve as a result.

The Copa del Rey final

It has also been agreed that the Copa del Rey final will be played on a weekend in which there will be no league games, so April 23, 2022 is the date that's been assigned. Games that were due to be played that weekend will be brought forward to the previous Wednesday, April 20 (all matches except those of the two cup finalists). We look forward to being there in a new final!

FC Barceloba: The Super Cup and Clásico

As for the Spanish Super Cup, the RFEF has not yet made the exact dates official, but following the trend of recent years, all indications are that it will be played in January. Atlético Madrid (league champions), Real Madrid (league runners-up), FC Barcelona (Cup champions) and Athletic Club (Cup runners-up) are involved. The pairings are champions of one competition against runners-up in the other, so there will be a Clásico in the semifinals, as well as Atlético Madrid v Athletic Club.

International breaks

Finally, there will be international breaks from September 1 to 8, October 8 to 12 and November 11 to 16, in order for countries to play in the qualifying matches for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

The Final Four of the Nations League will be played from 6 to 10 October, with the participation of Spain, Italy, Belgium and France, so there will probably be Barça representation. Finally, there will also be South American qualifiers for the World Cup from January 27 to February 1, 2022 and from March 24 to 29, 2022.

The winner of 2020/21 season, Atletico Madrid, will like to get the upper hand against one of their biggest rivals. The history between the two cubs makes this match more interesting.

After Atletico Madrid, Barcelona will return home to face Valencia. Valencia will look to get back to winning ways and regain their spot among the top teams in La Liga. The match will take place on October 17th.

When is El Clasico 2021-22 between Barcelona vs Real Madrid?

One of the biggest match in football, The El Clasico 2021-22 will take place on 24th of October 2021. This will be the first meeting of both teams and will want to give their best. It will also be the first El Clasico in many years without Sergio Ramos and first for the likes of Aguero and Depay.

Real Madrid will be without Zidane but with a coach under whom they saw immense success, Carlo Ancelotti. Ancelotti will look to win his first El Clasico, after returning to Real Madrid. The match will be interesting, as always. The return fixture will be played at Santiago Bernabeu or Alfredo de Stefano on March 20, depending if the construction is complete.

With the new season, many new faces in Blaugrana colors will be seen. Barcelona want to get the season started on a high and will be looking to win the La Liga title after 2 long seasons. The fixtures were confirmed by RFEF on June 30th.
