Plus Architecture has officially announced the completion of The Pacifica in Auckland’s CBD, measuring 178 metres high and housing over 200 apartments, with a boutique hotel and hospitality venues.
About The Pacifica, New Zealand’s Tallest Residential Tower
The Pacifica is a residential skyscraper in Auckland, New Zealand. Completed in 2020 after its construction it became the tallest residential building in New Zealand surpassing The Metropolis but is set to be overtaken in 2022 by the 187 m (614 ft) Seascape. The building offers stunning views of Auckland city and the surrounding harbour at 178 metres (584 ft) and 57 floors in height. The top two floors of the building contained a super penthouse that sold for NZ$40 million making it the most expensive apartment ever sold in New Zealand. In June 2021 The Pacifica won "Best Residential High Rise Development New Zealand" and "Best Apartment / Condominium New Zealand" in the international property awards which drew international attention to the tower.
Featuring sky-high luxury living, architect Jaimin Atkins of Plus Architecture New Zealand worked with developer Hengyi Pacific (NZ) Ltd to create a glass façade designed to reflect the surrounding city and harbour, and offer exhilarating views as far as Great Barrier Island, the edge of the Waitemata and beyond. An iconic design feature of the exterior is the Maori Pikorua motif, represented by the ‘twist’ pattern on the building’s exterior.
The $300 million Pacifica project is due to start next month. "By March next year you'll be starting to see the structure rising," said Dean Fossey, a Hengyi Pacific director.
The bottom levels will feature a 35-suite boutique hotel for which the operator is yet to be selected, a high-end restaurant and cafe. A laneway known as "Pacific Lane" will run between Commerce St, Fort St, and Gore St.
Two car-parking lifts are planned for The Pacifica, with robotic-style car stackers, as these maximise car parking. Residents will drive into a dock, leave their vehicle on a turntable, and then the car is remotely moved into place.
Considering first the impact on the city skyline and the relationship the tower would eventually have with Waitemata Harbour, Plus Architecture imagined an intervention that will integrate existing urban elements in close proximity to the site. In fact, the design incorporates and celebrates “the adjoining laneways, the former Taspac House, a 1920’s office building by a previous owner and over which The Pacifica will cantilever once complete; and finally, the neighboring ‘Achilles House’, a heritage-listed building typical of the many warehouse-style offices erected in the 20th century”.
The four main interface points of the site rise from the ground floor and twist to take the form of a traditional Maori Pikorua, symbolizing togetherness. Reaching upper levels, the mass takes on a shifting glass façade that mirrors the waters of the Waitemata Harbour. Featuring 273 apartments, the highrise includes enclosed winter gardens above the 26th floor. On the lower levels, The Pacifica offers a variety of commercial amenities, and a new laneway helps to activate the site, encouraging pedestrian traffic.
