"4 Minutes": 4 minutes to save the world
"4 Minutes" is a song by Madonna from her eleventh studio album Hard Candy (2008), featuring vocals by Justin Timberlake and Timbaland. The song creates urgency around taking action and encourages us to wake up and do something now.
It was released as the lead single from the album on March 17, 2008, by Warner Bros. Records. According to Madonna, the song is about saving the environment and "having a good time while we are doing it". She also cited the song as the inspiration for the documentary I Am Because We Are (2008).
The song was recorded at Sarm West Studios, in London, while the mixing of the track was finished at The Hit Factory studio, in New York City. Sound engineer Demo Castellon first worked on the vocals and then on the beats, while the synths were composed by Timbaland and Danja. An uptempo dance-pop song with an urban and hip hop style, "4 Minutes" incorporates Timbaland's characteristic bhangra beats and the instrumentation used in the song includes brass, foghorns and cowbells. The lyrics carry a message of social awareness, inspired by Madonna's visit to Africa and the human suffering she witnessed.

"I'm outta time, and all I got is four minutes
Fikki fikki, four minutes, aye
I'm outta time, and all I got is four minutes
Fikki fikki, four minutes, aye
I'm outta time, and all I got is four minutes (Four, four)
Fikki fikki, four minutes, aye
I'm outta time, and all I got is four minutes (Four, four)
Fikki fikki, four minutes, aye
I'm outta time, and all I got is four minutes (Four, four)
Fikki fikki, four minutes, aye
I'm outta time, and all I got is four minutes (Four, four)
Fikki fikki, four minutes, aye
I'm outta time, and all I got is four minutes (Four, four)
Fikki fikki, four minutes, aye
I'm outta time, and all I got is four minutes (Four, four)
Fikki fikki, ow, ow, c'mon
Ah. yeah, ha, breakdown, c'mon
[Justin Timberlake:]
Hey, uh, c'mon, Madonna
[Madonna and Justin Timberlake:]
C'mon, boy
I've been waiting for somebody to pick up my stroll
Well, don't waste time
Give me a sign, tell me how you wanna roll, mmm
I want somebody to speed it up for me
Then take it down slow
There's enough room for both
Well, I can handle that
You just gotta show me where it's at
Are you ready to go?
Are you ready to go?
[Madonna and Justin Timberlake:]
If you want it, you already got it
If you thought it, it better be what you want
If you feel it, it must be real just
Say the word, and I'mma give you what you want
[Madonna (Justin Timberlake):]
The time is waiting
(We only got four minutes to save the world)
No hesitating
Grab a boy (Then grab a girl)
Time is waiting
(We only got four minutes to save the world)
No hesitating
(We only got four minutes, heh, a-four minutes)
[Justin Timberlake (Madonna):]
So keep it up, keep it up
Don't be a pri (Hey) ma donna, uh
You gotta get 'em on, hop
(Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock, tick tock)
That's right, keep it up, keep it up
Don't be a pri (Hey) ma donna, uh
You gotta get 'em on, hop
(Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock, tick tock)
[Madonna and Justin Timberlake:]
Sometimes I think what I need is a "you" intervention, yeah
And you know I can tell that you like it
And that it's good, by the way that you move, oh hey
The road to hell is paved with good intentions, yeah
But if I die tonight, at least I can say I did what I wanted to do
Tell me, how 'bout you?
[Madonna and Justin Timberlake:]
If you want it, you already got it
If you thought it, it better be what you want
If you feel it, it must be real just
Say the word, and I'mma give you what you want
[Madonna (Justin Timberlake):]
The time is waiting
(We only got four minutes to save the world)
No hesitating
Grab a boy (Then grab a girl)
Time is waiting
(We only got four minutes to save the world)
No hesitating
(We only got four minutes, heh, a-four minutes)
[Justin Timberlake (Madonna):]
So keep it up, keep it up
Don't be a pri (Hey!) ma donna, uh
You gotta get 'em on, hop
(Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock, tick tock)
That's right, keep it up, keep it up
Don't be a pri (Hey!) ma donna, uh
You gotta get 'em on, hop
(Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock, tick tock)
[Timbaland (Madonna):]
Breakdown, yeah
(Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock)
Yeah, uh
(Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock)
I only got four minutes to save the world"
“4 Minutes” mainly details a sense of urgency to achieve a particular change either in the narrator’s personal world or in the world as a whole. In the intro, the emphasis is placed on the fact that though this time is inadequate, it may just be the perfect amount to push the kind of change she needs to happen. The first verse of the song however takes an unexpected turn when the singer uses euphemisms to describe an intimate encounter she wants to have. It is however uncertain if she and her partner are looking to save the world through their own relationship or are looking to use these 4 minutes to send a message through their music. |
