Yellow cab jumped the curb and struck the victims

On Christmas Day, a yellow taxi struck multiple pedestrians near Macy’s iconic store in Herald Square, Manhattan. The incident occurred around 4 p.m. at the bustling intersection of 6th Avenue and West 34th Street, an area crowded with holiday shoppers and tourists.

According to eyewitness accounts, the 58-year-old taxi driver lost control of the vehicle, jumped the curb, and plowed into the sidewalk. The chaotic scene saw six people injured, including a 9-year-old boy and his 41-year-old mother, who were rushed to Weill Cornell Medical Center. A 49-year-old woman was taken to Bellevue Hospital for treatment. Three other women, aged 49, 19, and 37, sustained minor injuries and declined immediate medical attention.

Eyewitnesses described moments of panic as bystanders rushed to aid the victims. Some helped lift the taxi to free individuals trapped underneath, while others worked to stabilize those injured. Despite the alarming nature of the incident, none of the injuries were life-threatening.

Cause of the Crash: Accident or Deliberate Attack?

The incident raised immediate concerns of a potential deliberate attack, reminiscent of recent vehicle-ramming events in Europe targeting crowded public spaces. The timing and location, during a peak holiday shopping period, added to public anxiety.

However, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) indicated that preliminary evidence points to an accidental cause. Investigators suspect the driver suffered a medical episode before losing control of the vehicle. There is currently no evidence suggesting the crash was intentional or part of a coordinated attack.

The driver of the taxi is a 58-year-old man.

Authorities have yet to disclose the driver's identity or any underlying medical condition that might have contributed to the crash. Witness accounts and surveillance footage are being analyzed to determine the exact sequence of events.

Public Reaction and Ongoing Investigation

The crash has heightened calls for vigilance during the holiday season in busy urban centers like Manhattan. While authorities continue to stress that this incident was likely accidental, the event underscores the importance of maintaining heightened security and emergency preparedness during times of increased foot traffic.

The NYPD is working to conclude its investigation, assuring the public that safety measures in New York City remain robust and that there is no broader threat linked to this incident.
