The catch is that not every Opening Day game is free, and the very first game of the season is not.

MLB’s 2026 season starts with Opening Night on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, when the New York Yankees play the San Francisco Giants.

Netflix

MLB’s official game-times release says that matchup is exclusive to Netflix, while Netflix’s Tudum page lists first pitch at 8:00 p.m. ET and pregame coverage at 7:00 p.m. ET.

Because Netflix’s Help Center says the service does not offer free trials, this game is not a true free watch for most fans.

NBC and Peacock

The better free option comes one day later. MLB says traditional Opening Day is Thursday, March 26, 2026, with 11 games on the schedule, including two games carried by NBC and Peacock: Pirates at Mets at 1:15 p.m. ET and Diamondbacks at Dodgers at 8:30 p.m. ET. NBC’s own Opening Day coverage page confirms those national windows.

If you live in an area where your local NBC station is available, you can watch those NBC broadcasts for free with an antenna, since the FCC states that local broadcast television is available free over the air.

So the clearest answer is this: you can legally watch part of MLB Opening Day 2026 for free, but not the full day and not the Opening Night opener. Free access is most realistic for the two NBC games on March 26.

What about Peacock?

Those same two national games will also stream there, but Peacock’s official site and pricing pages point to paid subscription plans, not a standard free sports tier. That means Peacock should be treated as a paid backup, not a dependable free option.

MLB Network

For the rest of the schedule, most games will likely require regional TV access, MLB.TV, or another paid streaming package. MLB’s 2026 streaming guide says MLB.TV remains part of the viewing mix, and MLB’s live-stream page continues to feature a Free Game of the Day on some dates. Still, MLB does not guarantee that your preferred Opening Day game will be the free one, so that should be seen as a bonus, not a plan.
