The 59th inaugural ceremonies are expected to look noticeably different than in years past due to surging COVID-19 cases and reached new heights after a pro-Trump mob’s attack on the Capitol, where insurrectionists managed to breach security and storm the building with alarming ease.

In addition, While past presidents traditionally attend the ceremony, President Donald Trump said that he won't be there. However, Vice President Mike Pence will attend the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.

When is Inauguration Day of Biden's Inauguration Ceremony in 2021?

Inauguration Day occurs every four years on January 20 (or January 21 if January 20 falls on a Sunday) at the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, DC. Each elected US president's term starts at noon on that day, according to the 20th Amendment to the Constitution.

Biden's inauguration will take place Wednesday, Jan. 20, on the west front of the US Capitol in Washington, DC.

The president-elect is required to take the oath of office before assuming duties. Following the presidential swearing-in ceremony, Biden will deliver his inaugural address.

The 20th Amendment didn’t take effect until October 1933, after the long lame-duck period once again proved problematic. No exact air time has been announced just yet, though opening remarks historically take place around 11:30 ET/8:30 a.m. PT.

Biden's inaugural committee on Sunday also said there will be a televised virtual parade featuring performances from people throughout the country. "The parade will celebrate America's heroes and reflect on the diversity, heritage and resilience of our country," the committee said in a tweet.

Former presidents Obama, Bush and Clinton are also expected to attend the inauguration.

The inaugural committee has emphasized that strict health and safety protocols will be in place for those who do attend; the committee has hired a chief medical adviser, Dr. David Kessler, to help organize the event in accordance with such protocols, according to The Wall Street Journal.

How do I get tickets or Invitations?

Traditionally, members of the public request free tickets through the office of their US senator or representative, but not this year. Due to COVID-19 concerns, Americans won't be able to get tickets, the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC) announced in mid-December.

This time, invitations to members of Congress will be limited to them and one guest. Commemorative ticket bundles and program packets will be made available to congressional offices for constituents following the ceremonies.

Biden’s inaugural committee is urging Americans not to attend in person and capping the number of available tickets. While members of Congress typically receive 200,000 inauguration tickets to hand out among their constituents, lawmakers this year will each receive only two tickets — one for themselves and one for a guest, theWashington Post reports.

What Biden will be sworn during the inauguration?

President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will be sworn into office on Jan. 20 on the steps of the U.S. Capitol, but the inaugural festivities will be largely virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the planning committee said on Tuesday, Reuters reports.

“Our goal is to create an inauguration that keeps people safe, honors the grand traditions of the presidency, and showcases the Biden-Harris administration’s renewed American vision for an inclusive, equitable, and unified citizenry,” Tony Allen, the CEO of the inaugural committee, said in the statement.

And After Sworn?

After the swearing-in ceremony, Biden and Harris will participate in a “Pass in Review,” a review of troops meant to reflect a peaceful transfer of power, according to the New York Times. Next, Biden will deliver his inaugural address before a limited number of government officials.

Biden and Harris are then set to receive a “presidential escort,” including representatives of every branch of the military, for the roughly mile-and-a-half trip to the White House from 15th Street. In a normal year, the inaugural parade attracts hundreds of thousands of people who flank Pennsylvania Avenue to watch the newly sworn-in president head to the White House. But this year, the inaugural committee is replacing the traditional procession with the presidential escort for one city block and reimagining the parade in virtual form.

What's the theme of the inauguration?

The theme for the 59th inaugural ceremonies is "Our Determined Democracy: Forging a More Perfect Union."

"The inaugural events are not only a hallmark of American governance and democracy, but also fulfill our Constitutional duty and give assurance -- for all people -- of our continued and unbroken commitment to continuity, stability, perseverance, and democracy," Blunt said.

What will New President Biden do first?

The president-elect says one of his biggest priorities is working to tackle COVID-19. Biden and Harris have already announced the formation of a COVID-19 advisory board to help shape the upcoming administration's response to the pandemic. The board consists of 13 public health experts and will be led by co-chairs Dr. David Kessler, a former Food and Drug Administration commissioner; Dr. Vivek Murthy, a former US surgeon general; and Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith, a researcher at Yale university.

Biden has also unveiled a plan that aims to ensure the US achieves a 100% clean-energy economy and net-zero emissions by 2050. During the presidential debates, Biden promised to get the US back into the Paris climate deal, which the US withdrew from under Trump. He reiterated that promise in his climate plan.

Luncheon has been canceled

Among the long-standing inaugural activities that have been called off owing to the pandemic is the post-inauguration luncheon, where members of Congress formally welcome the new president and vice-president. The luncheon, a symbolic display of bipartisanship during the transfer of power, was initially set to occur in a modified format that would involve instituting new health and safety protocols.

However after consulting with Biden’s inaugural planners, the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies canceled it altogether, Bloomberg reported.
