Atletico Madrid, the Champions of the 2020-21 La Liga season, will be hoping to begin with another set of positive displays as they envisage another shot to glory in the Spanish top flight football.
Atletico Madrid were on the top of things for a better half of the La Liga title race last season, but some shaky displays and not noteworthy results put their top spot in doubts in the ending stages of the campaign.
Atletico Madrid Key Dates
Atletico Madrid are the reigning champions and both Barcelona and Real Madrid will be desperate to wrestle the trophy back off Diego Simeone's side.
Atleti begin their title defence away at Celta Vigo on the weekend ending 15 August. Meanwhile, Real face an away match against Alaves and Barça entertain Real Sociedad.
As for El Clasico, the Camp Nou fixture will be played first on 24 October. This will then be followed by the return game at the Santiago Bernabeu on 20 March - a meeting which should have a big say in the La Liga title race.
The Madrid Derby will also be played at potentially vital stage of the season. Real's home fixture will take place on 12 December, while Atletico will play host to their fierce rivals on 8 May. Elsewhere, Barcelona will need to prepare for a trip to the capital to take on Atleti on 3 October. The Blaugrana will then welcome the champions to Catalonia on 6 February.
If the title goes to the final day of the season, we are in for a barnstorming finale. On Matchday 38 Barcelona are at home to Europa League holders Villarreal, Real host namesakes Real Betis and Atletico travel to Real Sociedad.
Atletico Madrid won their first La Liga crown since 2014 last term, holding off Barcelona and Real Madrid to claim the title. On the final day of the season, Atletico won 2-1 at Real Valladolid to clinch the title, finishing two points ahead of second-place Real and seven points ahead of Barcelona in third. |

Atletico Madrid 2021-22 Season: Latest News
La Liga champions Atletico Madrid have confirmed their first signing of the summer transfer window.
Portugal Under-19 forward Marcos Paulo has joined the club as a free agent following the expiration of his contract at Brazilian club Fluminense, the club said on Monday. Aged 20, he will go into the first-team squad at Los Rojiblancos and is likely to compete for a starting role at the Wanda Metropolitano next season.
Luis Suarez, Joao Felix, Thomas Lemar and Angel Correa are currently competing for the starting slots in attack, although the club may look at signing Moussa Dembele permanently following his stint at Lyon.
Atletico Madrid have released their three kits for next season. The home kit is, of course, in the classic rojiblanco, with a less orderly pattern than last year; more splattered paint than clean lines. Plus500 are the sponsor. The away kit is in navy with a red trim, while the third kit is in light blue with a rojiblanco collar.

Deyna Castellanos, Koke and Marcos Llorente, the latter pair away with La Roja at Euro 2020, modelled the kit. Koke enjoyed an excellent season for Atletico last year as did Llorente; the former led the team to the second La Liga title of the Diego Simeone era while the latter was the all-action star, hitting double figures in both goals and assists.
