The millimetre, also known as the millimetre, is a metric unit of length equal to one thousandth of a metre, which is the SI base unit of length. As a result, a metre is made up of 1000 millimetres. A centimetre is made up of ten millimetres.

The inch or inches is a unit of length in the imperial and customary measurement systems of the United Kingdom and the United States. It is one-twelfth of a yard or one-twelfth of a foot. The word inch is derived from the Roman uncia (“twelfth”) and is sometimes used to translate similar units in other measurement systems, which are usually understood to be derived from the width of the human thumb.

Inch, unit of British Imperial and United States Customary measure equal to 1/36 of a yard. The unit derives from the Old English ince, or ynce, which in turn came from the Latin unit uncia, which was “one-twelfth” of a Roman foot, or pes. ... Since 1959 the inch has been defined officially as 2.54 cm. |

If you want to calculate the number of inches when you have the number of millimeters, you can do so by either **multiplying the number of millimeters by 0.0393700787 inches or by dividing the number of millimeters by 25.4 millimeters.**

Example: 177.8 mm * (0.0393700787 in / 1 mm) = 7 in

Example: 177.8 mm * (1 in / 25.4 mm) = 7 in

How many millimeters is 4.78 inches? To find the answer, you will need to multiply 4.78 inches by 25.4 millimeters. 4.78 in * (25.4 mm / 1 in) = 121.412 mm |

Convert 117 inches into millimeters. Do so by multiplying 117 inches by 25.4 millimeters. 177 in * (25.4 mm / 1 in) = 4495.8 mm |

-Open your spreadsheet.

-Click inside the cell where you want to display inches.

-Type the formula =CONVERT(XX, “mm”, “in”) but replace “XX” with the cell containing the millimeter value.

Step 3: Type =CONVERT(XX, “mm”, “in”) into the cell. XX is the location of the MM value that you want to convert.

In the example image below, the cell I want to convert is cell A2, so my formula would be =CONVERT(A2, “mm”, “in”)

You can then apply your formula to other cells in the column by clicking the handle at the bottom-right corner of the cell, then dragging it down. Excel will automatically populate the selected cells with the formula, and will update the target cell relative to the original formula. So, for example, the formula in cell B3 would be adjusted to =CONVERT(A3, “mm”, “in”)

You may notice, such as in my screenshot above, that you are seeing a lot of decimal place values.

You can modify the number of displayed decimal places by right-clicking a cell, choosing Format Cells, then clicking Number and specifying the desired number of decimal places.

Note that the values in inches are being displayed as a formula. If you copy and paste those values to another location, you might run into an issue. You can resolve this by pasting as a value instead of a formula. If you select the Paste button on the Home tab you will see that option among the different paste actions. You can use a similar function in Excel if you want to convert a unit in the opposite direction. Simply enter the function as described above, but switch the unit of measurement around. So, for example, you would enter this into your Excel cell to go from millimeters to inches – =CONVERT(A3, “in”, “mm”). |
