What is Inch?

Definition: An inch (symbol: in) is a unit of length in the imperial and US customary systems of measurement. An inch was defined to be equivalent to exactly 25.4 millimeters in 1959. There are 12 inches in a foot and 36 inches in a yard.

History/origin: The term "inch" was derived from the Latin unit "uncia" which equated to "one-twelfth" of a Roman foot.

There have been a number of different standards for the inch in the past, with the current definition being based on the international yard. One of the earliest definitions of the inch was based on barleycorns, where an inch was equal to the length of three grains of dry, round barley placed end-to-end. Another version of the inch is also believed to have been derived from the width of a human thumb, where the length was obtained from averaging the width of three thumbs: a small, a medium, and a large one.

Current use: The inch is mostly used in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. It is also sometimes used in Japan (as well as other countries) in relation to electronic parts, like the size of display screens.

What is Centimeter?

Definition: A centimeter (symbol: cm) is a unit of length in the International System of Units (SI), the current form of the metric system. It is defined as 1/100 meters.

History/origin: A centimeter is based on the SI unit meter, and as the prefix "centi" indicates, is equal to one hundredth of a meter. Metric prefixes range from factors of 10-18 to 1018 based on a decimal system, with the base (in this case the meter) having no prefix and having a factor of 1. Learning some of the more commonly used metric prefixes, such as kilo-, mega-, giga-, tera-, centi-, milli-, micro-, and nano-, can be helpful for quickly navigating metric units.

Current use: The centimeter, like the meter, is used in all sorts of applications worldwide (in countries that have undergone metrication) in instances where a smaller denomination of the meter is required. Height is commonly measured in centimeters outside of countries like the United States.

How to Convert Centimeters to Inches

This lesson talks about converting centimeters to inches. Both centimeters and inches are measurement units. Inches are measurement units used in the United States, while centimeters are measurement units that are part of the metric system and are used in most other parts of the world. There are 100 centimeters in 1 meter and 12 inches in 1 foot. If you live in the U.S., then you're probably more familiar with inches. But if you live in Europe, then centimeters is what you're probably more used to. The conversion from centimeters to inches is an easy one and only requires one step.

Step 1: Multiply By the Conversion Factor

This is the only step you need to take. The conversion factor for converting centimeters to inches is 0.3937. This conversion comes from dividing 1 by 2.54, the conversion number for converting inches to centimeters. There are 2.54 centimeters in 1 inch. Using the conversion number of 0.3937, the conversion formula for converting x centimeters to inches is this:

x centimeters * 0.3937 = inches

All you have to do is to multiply your centimeters by 0.3937 and you will have your inches. If you can remember the number 0.3937, then you will be able to convert your centimeters to inches that much quicker.

Or

To convert cm into inches, just divide the centimeter value by 2.54

Inches = Cm / 2.54

Let's take an example of how to convert cm into inches. Let's say someone's height is 157 cm. But that person has to fill his height in a form in inches. For this, he will just need to do the following calculation:

Example

Convert 20 cm to inches:

d(″) = 20cm / 2.54 = 7.874″

Converting Centimeters to Inches in Excel and Google Sheets

The CONVERT function is the best method to convert values given in centimeters to inches. We just need to enter both the value and measurement types into the function. We can use the abbreviations of the measurements.

Let’s test the formula on an example for better understanding. Say in column B we have some values given in centimeters that need to be converted to inches. So, just type the following formula in cell C4 and drag it down:

=CONVERT(B5,"cm","in")

By changing the values in Column B, the Column C values will update automatically.

The Manual approach

The first approach we are going to show you is the manual way. You can convert cm to inches with a simple math calculation. 1 inch is approximately equal to 2.54 cm. Thus, you need to divide the centimeter-value by 2.54 to get the value in inches.

Let's say the cell C2 contains a value in centimeters. Simply use a formula like below to find the value in inches.

Program/Source Code

Here is the source code of the Python Program to Calculate the Average of Numbers in a Given List. The program output is also shown below.

  cm=int(input("Enter the height in centimeters:"))  inches=0.394*cm  feet=0.0328*cm  print("The length in inches",round(inches,2))  print("The length in feet",round(feet,2))

Why Convert Length from Centimeters to Inches?

Centimeter (or Centimetre) is a unit for measuring length. It is one hundredth part of a meter. However, United States of America uses the customary unit of length.
