According to the Korea Herald, during those tense and critical moments, a passenger aboard the ill-fated Jeju Air flight sent a message to a loved one, explaining that the plane was unable to land due to a bird being stuck on its wing.

"A bird is stuck on the wing, and the plane can't land. This just happened. Should I leave a final message?" the passenger wrote. After this message, the family member could no longer contact the passenger.

The crash occurred at around 9:00 a.m. on December 29, when the Jeju Air flight carrying 175 passengers and six crew members skidded off the runway at Muan International Airport in South Korea, eventually colliding with a perimeter fence.

The aircraft then exploded, erupting into a fireball. It wasn’t until 9:50 a.m. that firefighters were able to extinguish the flames.

In response to the disaster, the South Korean government convened the Inter-Ministerial Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters to coordinate relief and response efforts.
