The jokes on social media are aplenty following the news that a 23-year-old man, Batman bin Suparman, has been given a prison sentence of 33 months by a court in Singapore. Batman was arrested after being caught stealing money from a shop, as well as using his brother's cash card to withdraw money. Far-fetched as it seems, this unusual name does appear to be entirely genuine - and it's not gone unnoticed.
Back in May 2008, a Singaporean ID card belonging to one Batman bin Suparman began being widely shared on social media. It was picked up by the blog Gizmodo and ran from there. Since then, the picture has been re-posted over 300 times, there have been more 15,000 tweets using his name, and a Facebook fan page has been set up in his honour. It has more than 11,000 followers.
27. Baby Google

A nine-year-old girl whose parents named her Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii was put into court guardianship in New Zealand so that her name could be changed.
A family court judge, Rob Murfitt, gave the order after hearing that the child was embarrassed about her name and had refused to reveal it to friends. "She told people her name was K because she feared being mocked and teased," the child's lawyer, Colleen MacLeod, told the court.
The judge criticised parents who give their offspring bizarre names, saying it exposed children to ridicule among their peers.

A New Zealand mom has transformed her children into tiny rock and rollers by naming them Slayer, Pantera and Metallica, documentary filmmaker David Farrier reported in his newsletter, Webworm.
Additionally, Metallica’s middle name is And Justice For All, an ode to the band’s fourth studio album.
“Proud to report that a New Zealand mother has named her children Metallica, Pantera and Slayer,” wrote Farrier. “She told me, ‘It’s not easy raising three of the heaviest bands.’ ”
Farrier — whose credits include creating the Netflix series “Dark Tourist” — does not identify the mother, but to verify her headbanging claim, he sought out the babies’ birth certificates.
“I reached out to the Registrar General himself, asking if there are any restrictions naming babies after band names, or albums,” Farrier wrote. New Zealand Registrar General Jeff Montgomery responded to say there are not, with a few reservations.
22. Mister Love
On March 13, 2001, a pastor took a young man to LAPD’s Van Nuys Station and reported that the male had been sexually abused by Mr. Love for several years. Detectives from Van Nuys and the Sexually Exploited Child Unit conducted an initial investigation and determined that Love was on probation for a 1998 conviction of possessing child pornography and was registered as a sex offender as a result of that conviction.
Mr. Love was taken into custody as he drove away from his residence in the area of Victory Boulevard and Coldwater Canyon in Van Nuys. Following his arrest, a search was conducted of his car and residence. As a result, evidence was discovered that corroborated the victim’s statements. 18. Buddy Bear

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver announced the birth of his son, Buddy Bear Maurice—brother to Poppy Honey Rosie, Daisy Boo Pamela and Petal Blossom Rainbow. Perhaps Buddy Bear Maurice is not so strange in Hollywood. Just recently, Ever Carradine, actress and member of a multi-generational Hollywood dynasty, gave her baby daughter an equally out-of-the-box-name: Chaplin Haddow. It got me wondering: could there be an extreme-baby-naming (EBN) gene that passes from generation to generation?

Superhero fans might have spotted that Kal-El was the Kryptonian birth name of Clark Kent, aka Superman. It’s also the name chosen by actor Nicolas Cage and ex-wife Alice Kim for their son.
16. Cricket
Cougar Town actress Busy Philipps, 34, and her hubby, Marc Silverstein, welcomed their second baby girl back in July, 2013 and named her Cricket Pearl. The name drew criticism, but it wasn’t so surprising, since their other daughter’s name is Birdie Leigh.

That wasn’t the case in Wales however, where one woman was banned from naming her baby daughter Cyanide in 2016.

She said Cyanide was a "lovely, pretty name" with positive connotations as it was taken by Hitler.
The Court of Appeal ruled the "unusual" choices might harm the children.
The court was told the mother had a history of mental illness, drug and alcohol abuse.
13. Stormi

We all have to wonder how and why Kylie Jenner decided on the name. 'Stormi', according to Kylie Jenner, the 3-month-old at the time, practically named herself. "I really don’t know how we thought of Storm. Her dad (Travis Scott) insisted it was him, but I feel like it was me. And that kind of just stuck with us", "and then I didn’t really like just Storm — I didn’t feel like that was her name so named her Stormi."
12. Lucifer
A couple has claimed they were told their four-month-old son “would not succeed in life” after they tried to officially register his name as Lucifer.
Dan and Mandy Sheldon, from Chesterfield, Derbyshire, said they lodged an official complaint against Derbyshire County Council over a registrar who tried to discourage them from choosing the name, which is often used as a moniker for the Devil.
Mr Sheldon claimed the couple thought it was a “unique name” and said they did not expect to get “so much grief about it”.
“I tried to explain that we are not religious people, and Lucifer in Greek means ‘light-bringer’ and ‘morning’ but she wouldn’t listen.”
He added: “She even told us that it was illegal to name a child that in New Zealand and that maybe we could name him something else but refer to him as Lucifer at home.”
11. Awesome
This was another name registered in Scotland. Perhaps the conversation started, ‘You know what would be an awesome name for the baby…?’
10. Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116
Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116 — it’s pronounced “Albin” — was born in 1991 to parents in the small town of Varberg, Sweden. It caused a problem because, in 1982, Sweden enacted what a “Naming Law” which regulates what first names are acceptable for children born within its borders. The law states, in part (and translated into English): “First names shall not be approved if they can cause offense or can be supposed to cause discomfort for the one using it, or names which for some obvious reason are not suitable as a first name.” According to Wikipedia, the law was originally intended to prevent commoners from taking the names of nobility, but it also ensnares other names as well. ‘It allows you to drop that pressure of having to have somebody else with you in order to be successful,’ she said. ‘I’d recommend it as much as I’d recommend being a parent, because the level of love you’ll feel is something you can’t describe until you do it.’

Like many new parents, choosing the right name for your child can be hard. But what happens when the father wants to reference a Star Wars character and the mother thinks a more culturally traditional name is better?
"The question of what name the child would be given by the parents had caused considerable difficulty between the parties," the Sydney Morning Herald report Justice William Johnston as telling the court.
Born in 2015, the father of the little boy - identified in court documents by the pseudonym Mr Koruba - wished to name his son Vader after his favourite Star Wars character. The boy's mother, identified in court documents by the pseudonym Ms Furst, didn't exactly share Koruba's enthusiasm for the dark side and refused to sign the birth certificate until another name could be agreed upon.
Eventually, the pair settled upon a first name, selected a name paying tribute to Koruba's African heritage for his middle name, and adopted Furst's surname for the little boy.
1. X Æ A-12
Photo: BBC |
The Canadian singer, whose real name is Claire Elise Boucher, gave birth to her first child with Musk on 4 May 2020.
Following the birth, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Musk announced the news on a post on Twitter, in which he also revealed that his son was called “X Æ A-12 Musk".
However, speculation arose that the unusual moniker might not comply with the law in California, where the couple live.
According to Californian law, names must be written on birth certificates “using the 26 alphabetical letters of the English language”, however apostrophes and dashes can be included.
Just under a month after the couple announced the name change, the baby’s name was officially confirmed on his birth certificate, according to TMZ.
On the birth certificate, it states that the baby’s first name is “X”, it’s middle name is “AE A-XII” and its last name is “Musk”.
