Top 9 Biggest Film Festivals in 2024
There were once only five iconic film festivals: Berlinale, Cannes, Venice, TIFF, and Sundance. However, with the industry expanding quickly, a few more have become must-attend occasions that have a significant impact on both the awards circuit and the films that people watch. For example, the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado is well known for presenting critically acclaimed films that are being screened concurrently at larger festivals such as Venice. Here is a list of the major film festivals that has been updated, along with a website link and their confirmed dates.
1. Sundance Film Festival: January 18 – 28, 2024

The Sundance Film Festival is the ultimate gathering of original storytellers and audiences seeking new voices and fresh perspectives. Our annual program includes dramatic and documentary features, short films, and episodic content. We also host daily filmmaker conversations, panel discussions, and other events. Since 1985, hundreds of films launched at the Festival have gone on to gain critical acclaim and reach new audiences worldwide.
The 2024 Sundance Film Festival runs January 18-28.

Mati Diop’s documentary Dahomey, about artefacts being returned from Paris to present-day Benin, was awarded the Golden Bear for best film at the Berlin International Film Festival tonight (February 24).
After Mark Dornford-May's musical U-Carmen eKhayelitsha in 2005, Les Film du Losange's film is the second from the African continent to win the Berlinale's top prize. It is also the second year in a row that a documentary has clinched the Golden Bear, following Nicolas Philibert’s On The Adamant last year.

The 31st edition of the SXSW Film & TV Festival will take place from March 8–16, 2024, spanning nine days of screenings. The festival is renowned for introducing an elite and varied slate of films, television shows, and virtual reality productions, as well as for acting as a platform for intelligent, passionate, powerful crowds to come together globally and spark discussions for months on end.
Creatives of all kinds come together for the highly regarded SXSW Film & TV Festival program over nine days in March. The Film & TV Festival is an unmatched experience at the forefront of discovery, creativity, and innovation. It runs concurrently with the SXSW Conference, Music, and Comedy Festivals, giving attendees the chance to network with a wide range of industry experts.

Each season, at the Film & TV Awards ceremony, the winners of the SXSW Film & TV Festival Narrative Feature Competition, Documentary Feature Competition, Design Awards, and Special Awards are revealed. The winners of the Short Film Program are also eligible for Jury Awards in their respective screening categories.
4. Cannes Film Festival: May 14 – 25, 2024

5. Tribeca Film Festival: June 5 – 16, 2024
Established and up-and-coming artists have been showcasing their innovative and original storytelling at the Tribeca Festival for over twenty years. The dates of the 2024 Tribeca Festival are June 5–16 in New York City. June of next year will see Tribeca continue to delve into innovative creative work in the fields of games, film, television, talks, audio storytelling, and more.Awards in 2023 amounted to more than $80,000 worth of artwork. 6. Venice International Film Festival: August 28 – September 7, 2024

La Biennale di Venezia is in charge of organizing the 81st Venice International Film Festival, which takes place on the Lido di Venezia from August 28, 2024, to September 7, 2024.
The International Federation of Film Producers Association, or FIAPF, has granted the Festival official recognition.
The Festival's mission is to promote freedom of speech and the arts by increasing public awareness of and support for international film in all of its forms as entertainment, art, and a business. To improve our understanding of the history of cinema, one section is devoted to improving restoration efforts on classic movies.
7. Telluride Film Festival (USA): August 31-September 4
Since its founding in 1974, the Telluride Film Festival has expanded to become one of the nation's biggest and most renowned film festivals. Attendees travel from all over for this four-day event, which primarily screens new movies. This event is even more popular because major celebrities and filmmakers are usually present.
The entire film industry turns its attention to Colorado during this festival, which is typically held soon after the well-known Cannes Film Festival and just before the Toronto International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival. Mulholland Drive and Brokeback Mountain are two of the infamous movies that made their world premieres at the Telluride Film Festival before going on to become enormous global hits.
The 51st annual festival will take place this year on August 29–September 2, 2024, from Thursday through Monday.
8. Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF): September 9 – 19, 2024
In the nearly 50 years since it began as the Toronto Festival of Festivals at the Windsor Arms Hotel, the Toronto International Film Festival has grown into a destination event. The festival also acquired a permanent location in 2010 when it moved into the TIFF Bell Lightbox, a hybrid of a movie theater and gallery with eateries and educational spaces.
But over the course of a week, hundreds of films are screened at various locations across Toronto, such as the Princess of Wales Theatre, Roy Thomson Hall, Scotiabank Theatre in the Entertainment District, and the Cinesphere IMAX Theatre, in addition to a few drive-in theaters.
At the Toronto International Film Festival, several well-known and Oscar-nominated movies made their premieres, including Silver Linings Playbook, 127 Hours, and Black Swan. With its own awards, some juried and others decided by audience vote, the Festival places Toronto on par with Sundance, Telluride, Cannes, and other influential film festivals.
During the Festival, there are also TIFF Industry Conferences, which feature talks and panel discussions led by some of the industry's most prominent screen professionals. These conferences are very influential and inspirational.
9. New York Film Festival: September 27- October 13, 2024
Starting today, Film at Lincoln Center is announcing a call for short film submissions for the 62nd New York Film Festival (NYFF), which will take place from September 27 to October 13, 2024. Since 1963, NYFF, which returns each fall, has been a constant feature of New York's diverse cultural and historical landscape. The 62nd edition, which is produced by Film at Lincoln Center, will take place over 17 days and offers yet another lineup of important international film releases.
FilmFreeway will accept submissions of short films from February 26 to May 6. During this time, there will be a $50 entry fee. This fee will support additional festival operations, such as artist support, and a seasonal staff of screeners for short film submissions. The selection committee of NYFF, which is noncompetitive, curates each section with assistance from a global network of program advisors and screeners. FilmFreeway only accepts short films (40 minutes or less).
The NYFF's Currents section takes submissions for short films from FilmFreeway into consideration. Currents is a supplement to NYFF's Main Slate that provides a more comprehensive overview of modern cinema while highlighting fresh and avant-garde voices. A wide range of short, medium, and feature-length films by artists and filmmakers at the forefront of experimental, narrative, and documentary forms are featured in this section.
2024 Film Festival Calendar: Full List of Upcoming Festivals by Month
These festivals may be smaller in scope and notoriety, but they serve an important purpose: they screen films most people won’t otherwise get to see. Some fests are representative of their community (the Busan Film Fest, for instance, serves as the largest platform for Asian cinema). Other fests specialize in overlooked genres (the Locarno Film Fest has a reputation for screening the boldest and most bonkers films of the year). Plenty, too, offer incredible lineups that feature the best of the year, like Slamdance, BFI London, and the San Sebastian Film Festival.
