The total area of the mall is estimated to be about 4.2 million square feet, and the total commercial area of the facility is about 2.5 million square feet. The name of the shopping center is derived from the name of a small airport which used to be located in the very building of the mall.

Occupying 154,000m2, the Bluewater Shopping Centre is the largest in England. Before plunging into this shopping Utopia, relax and refresh in the Welcome Halls and visit one of the Concierge Desks where all the information needed for an exciting and successful day is available.
The triangular site houses over 330 stores distributed through three individually styled malls. The Guildhall offers classic high fashion retail, with lifestyle stores and, in The Village, gourmet restaurants and cafés.

The Thames Walk has high street fashion along with themed cafés, American style diners and a sports bar.
The site itself provides a setting of great contrast. Surrounded by towering 50 metre high chalk cliffs, the buildings stand amidst tranquil lakes, trees and parkland. Here cycles can be hired, as can rowing boats, or there is fishing, putting and rock-climbing to occupy an hour or two. For younger visitors there is an adventure playground; it is an apt description for the Timberland Discovery Trail, and the All Stars active one.

The shopping centre opened in the 1980s as part of a development to revive the western end of Preston's main street, Fishergate. The site car park, along with the station car park, occupy the remainder of the former goods yard and the site of the East Lancashire platforms of the station, which were demolished in the early 1970s.
It is the second largest shopping centre in Preston city centre, the first being St George's Shopping Centre (formerly The Mall).
The shopping centre was sold to Benson Elliot in August 2013, after former owner Agora Shopping Centres Fund was placed into administration.
