Who is Nicola Sturgeon?

Nicola Sturgeon was born on July 19, 1970 in Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland as Nicola Ferguson Sturgeon.

She has been working as head of the Scottish Government, the First Minister is responsible for the overall development, implementation and presentation of the administration's policies and for promoting and representing Scotland at home and overseas.

Subject to Parliament's agreement, the First Minister appoints other ministers - including a Deputy First Minister and cabinet secretaries - from among Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs).

The First Minister chairs the Scottish Cabinet, the main forum for ministers to consider and make key decisions on the strategic priorities and policies of the government to achieve its objectives, Gov.scot noted.

The Apology for Taking off Mask at Bar

Scotland’s First Minister said she was ‘kicking herself’ after breaking coronavirus rules she had enforced. In the image, obtained by The Scottish Sun, she can be seen standing several metres away from the women, who are sat together at a table. Sturgeon had been at the Stable Bar and Restaurant following the funeral of a senior Scottish Government civil servant at nearby Mortonhall Crematorium. Earlier in the day she could be seen wearing a tartan mask, but she took it off inside the venue.

The SNP leader said of the incident: ‘Last Friday, while attending a funeral wake, I had my mask off briefly. I talk every day about the importance of masks, so I’m not going to offer any excuses. I was in the wrong, I’m kicking myself and I’m sorry.’ Face masks have been mandatory for all customers inside hospitality settings, such as bars, pubs or restaurants, since September 13. The mask can only be taken off if the person is seated at their own table. The First Minister was pictured chatting to three women inside the bar.

A Scottish Conservative spokesman said Sturgeon ‘should know better’ and had undermined ‘essential public health messaging’ by forgetting her own rules. They added: ‘It’s a blunder that an ordinary member of the public wouldn’t get away with. There cannot be one rule for Nicola Sturgeon and another for everyone else.’, Metro.co.uk noted.

Career Path

Nicola Sturgeon joined the SNP at the age of 16 and has been campaigning for Scottish independence ever since. Before she became an MSP, Nicola worked as a solicitor at Drumchapel Law Centre, helping people with legal problems.

Nicola was elected as an MSP representing the city of Glasgow in 1999 and was re-elected as a Glasgow MSP in 2003. In 2007 Nicola won the Glasgow Govan constituency from Labour. Following a review of Scottish Parliament constituency boundaries in 2010 the Govan constituency was abolished. Nicola stood as the SNP candidate for Glasgow Southside, which took in most of her former Govan constituency. She was elected with 54 per cent of the vote. She was elected as First Minister on 19 November 2014, according to SNP.org.
