The second Democratic Hispanic governor in American history, Michelle Lujan Grisham is now serving as the 32nd governor of the state of New Mexico. On January 1st, 2019, she came into power. Her term will conclude on January 1st, 2023.

Democratic Party candidate Grisham ran for governor of New Mexico. The general election was won by her on November 6, 2018.

In the U.S. House from 2013 to 2019, Lujan Grisham represented New Mexico's 1st Congressional District. During the 115th US Congress, she served as the Congressional Hispanic Caucus' chair.

Michelle Lujan Grisham's Vision

As governor, Lujan Grisham has put into effect a number of policies that are grounded in research and aimed at improving New Mexico's public education system, growing the state's economy to create more high-quality jobs, and protecting the state's air, land, and water. She presided over one of the most fruitful legislative sessions in state history in 2019, enacting a wide range of bipartisan legislation, including a landmark move toward sustainable energy and a historic investment in public education.

Lujan Grisham, a longtime state cabinet secretary at both the New Mexico Department of Aging and Long-Term Services and Department of Health, has been a leading supporter of investments in health care infrastructure and creative programming that have improved access and quality of care for New Mexicans throughout the state as well as for seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities.

She was chosen to represent New Mexico's 1st Congressional District in Washington for three terms after being elected to the U.S. House in 2011. She actively supported local tribes, equal pay for women, public schools, public lands, and veterans' health care while serving in Congress. She was also a strong proponent for preserving and establishing clean New Mexico jobs. She developed as an outspoken, prominent national leader in the fight against reactionary government anti-immigrant legislation as chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

Lujan Grisham introduced and spearheaded the movement for Care Corps, an innovative caregiving initiative that places volunteers in communities to provide non-medical services to seniors and people with disabilities. She was motivated by a strong sense of compassion for the elderly and people with disabilities and had personal experience as a caregiver. People can continue to live independently in their homes and communities with this support.

Lujan Grisham received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of New Mexico after being born in Los Alamos, growing up in Santa Fe, and graduating from St. Michael's High School in Santa Fe.

Prior to entering politics, Lujan Grisham served as an attorney for the State Bar of New Mexico's Legal Referral for the Elderly Program. She also helped create a small company called the Delta Consulting Group, which aimed to offer health insurance to people who had been turned down by other insurance providers.

She is a grandma of three and a member of the 12th generation of New Mexicans. She looks after Sonja, her mother, who needs care.
