Claire Elise Boucher (born March 17, 1988), known professionally as Grimes, is a Canadian musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer. Her music has incorporated elements of varied styles, including dream pop, electronic, R&B, and hip hop, while touching on science fiction and feminist themes. She has released five studio albums. Here are her full biography, including personal life, career, net worth.
Lover of Elun Musk: Early Life And Education
Boucher was born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia. She is of Québécois, Ukrainian and Russian descent. She graduated from Lord Byng Secondary School and studied ballet for 11 years. At age 18, she moved to Montréal, Quebec to attend Montréal's McGill University to study neuroscience.
During her studies, she began to record and perform under the name Grimes, taking the name from grime music after discovering the existence of the genre on MySpace. However, as Grimes became a more serious endeavour for her, she began to miss a large number of classes, and began only attending to take exams, resulting in the university taking punitive actions against her and ultimately expelling her.
In Montréal she began putting on concerts with her friends at Lab Synthèse, a performance space they started, which was located in an abandoned textile factory that Arbutus Records evolved out of. Two of her songs were released (under her real name, Claire Boucher) on Arbutus Records' Spring 2009 Sampler.
Lover of Elun Musk: Music Career And Achievement
She began making music as Grimes a year later, using the layered structures of Panda Bear's Person Pitch as an inspiration for her own approach to songwriting. During this time, she and her friends staged shows at an old textile factory that they dubbed Lab Synthèse. The scene that spawned Lab Synthèse also founded Arbutus Records, the label that released Grimes' early work. Two songs released under her own name appeared on a 2009 sampler from the label; her first two albums as Grimes, Geidi Primes (which was inspired by Frank Herbert's series of Dune books) and Halfaxa, were released in 2010. The following year, Grimes left McGill, collaborated on a split EP with d'Eon that was co-released by Arbutus and the like-minded Hippos in Tanks, and appeared on Lykke Li's North American tour.
In January 2012, Grimes signed with 4AD and her debut for the label, Visions, arrived later that month. Recorded in a matter of weeks in Grimes' Montreal apartment, its mix of bright pop and dark atmospheres earned instant critical acclaim: the album appeared on many year-end lists and earned a Juno Award for Electronic Album of the Year. Grimes signed to Jay-Z's Roc Nation management company in 2013, and released the single "Go" in June 2014.
As she worked on her fourth album, Grimes collaborated with Bleachers in 2015 on the song "Entropy" for the HBO TV series Girls and released another single, "REALiTi," which featured a video directed by Boucher. Art Angels, featuring contributions from Janelle Monáe and Taiwanese rapper Aristophanes, arrived late in 2015 and was praised for its experimental yet catchy songwriting. The album topped Billboard's Alternative Album Chart and reached number two on the Billboard Top Independent Album Chart.
In 2016, Grimes collaborated with singer/songwriter HANA on The Ac!d Reign Chronicles, a series of self-produced videos for their songs that they filmed while touring Europe. The following January, Grimes lent her vocals and production skills to a track with Aristophanes. That October, she and HANA adopted the name Trashique to release their cover of Tegan and Sara's "Dark Come Soon."
In 2018, Grimes embarked on several high-profile collaborations. In addition to appearing on Monáe's album Dirty Computer and working with LOONA yyxy, she made cameos on Mindless Self Indulgence frontman Jimmy Urine's solo project Euringer and Poppy's album Am I a Girl? She also contributed the song "that's what the drugs are for" to an Apple commercial and wrote the theme song for the Netflix animated series Hilda. In November 2018, Grimes released the industrial-tinged single "We Appreciate Power," a song inspired by the North Korean propaganda girl group Moranbong Band that reunited her with HANA.
Early in 2019, Grimes appeared on the U.K. metalcore outfit Bring Me the Horizon's album amo. Later that year, she debuted several tracks from her fifth album, including the i_o collaboration "Violence" and “4ÆM," which was also featured in the video game Cyberpunk 2077 (in which Grimes portrayed Lizzy Wizzy, a singer in the game's world). An ethereal yet hard-hitting concept album that explored climate change and human extinction, Miss Anthropocene appeared in February 2020. Along with topping the Billboard Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart, the album reached number three on the Billboard Independent Albums chart and number 32 on the Billboard 200. The following year saw the release of Miss Anthropocene (Rave Edition), which featured remixes by a host of artists including BloodPop, Channel Tres, Julien Bracht, Richie Hawtin, and Modeselektor. 2021 saw the release of the single "Player of Games," which appeared in the video popular game Rocket League.

Her work has been likened to various artists, including Björk, Siouxsie Sioux and Enya, and she was described by Tastemakers Magazine as an "alien love-child of Aphex Twin and ABBA". The Guardian summarised her musical style as "sounding a little like everything you've ever heard, the whole sounds like nothing you've ever heard". Her music has experimented with elements of art pop, synthpop, witch house, baroque pop, dream pop, ambient, electro-R&B and dark wave.

Boucher has a step-brother who raps under the name Jay Worthy; they collaborated on the songs "Christmas Song", released on the Rough Trade bonus disc of her album Visions, and "Christmas Song II (grinch)", a song uploaded to YouTube which never saw an official release. One of her brothers, Mac Boucher, is often involved in the making of her music videos, such as "Go", "REALiTi", "Flesh without Blood/Life in the Vivid Dream", "Kill V. Maim", "Venus Fly", "We Appreciate Power", and "Violence".
Boucher has numerous tattoos, many of which she did herself. She has stated that she is vegetarian unless she deems it inconvenient for others to cater to her nutritional needs. In 2014, she wrote a blog post expressing an aversion to hard drugs and regretting having lost friends to drugs and alcohol.
Since 2018, Boucher has been in a relationship with technology entrepreneur Elon Musk. They met after discovering on Twitter that they both came up with the same pun relating to Rococo and the thought experiment Roko's basilisk. The same year, she began using the name c (the symbol for the speed of light) in her personal life.
On January 8, 2020, Boucher announced that she was pregnant with her and Musk's first child together. Grimes gave birth on May 4, 2020, with Musk announcing via Twitter that both Grimes and their baby were doing well. Boucher and Musk have stated that they named the child X Æ A-12 (pronounced "Ex Ash A Twelve" or "Ex Aye Eye"), although it has been reported that the name violates the naming law in California, where the child was born. On May 25th, Grimes confirmed that GoWon of the korean girl group LOONA, former collaborator with GoWon in the form of the debut title track of their subunit Loona YYXY, is the godmother of X Æ A-12. She confirmed this through a response to a comment on one of the posts on Instagram.
Elon Musk and Grimes’ Relationship
A roller coaster romance. Elon Musk and Grimes, whose real name is Claire Boucher, were first linked in May 2018 and have since welcomed a son together.
The couple made their red carpet debut in May 2018, shortly after reports surfaced of their relationship. However, it has not always been smooth sailing for the businessman and the singer. They weathered split rumors and a very public feud with Azealia Banks in August 2018 before reuniting.
Fans speculated about their status for months, as the pair continued to be spotted together everywhere from the Kardashian-Jenner family Christmas party to China.
Musk and Grimes seemingly confirmed they were back on when she announced in January 2020 that she was pregnant. Though she did not caption her Instagram photo that showed off her baby bump, she referred to herself as “knocked up” in the comments section.
Nearly two months later, the Canada native revealed in a Rolling Stone profile that the Tesla CEO was the father of her child. She opened up in the interview about the impact of their relationship on her career. “No one believes me about this, but I just did not understand what I was getting into at all,” she explained. “Not that I’m mad about it. I just didn’t think it would be a thing. The s–t that’s happened with my boyfriend this year has overwritten so much of my life’s work.”
Grimes described her pregnancy as a major decision, made in part because of her trust in Musk. “For a girl, it’s sacrificing your body and your freedom. It’s a pretty crazy sacrifice and only half of the population has to do it. It was really profound to me when I decided I was going to do it, to actually go through the act of like, y’know, unprotected sex,” she admitted. “I’m just like, ‘I have sacrificed my power in this moment. I have, like, capitulated.’ And I have spent my whole life avoiding that situation. I have never capitulated to anything, so it was just a profound commitment.”
She added: “I do actually just really love my boyfriend. So I was like, ‘You know, sure.’”
In September 2021, the businessman told Page Six, “[Grimes and I] are semi-separated but still love each other, see each other frequently and are on great terms.”
The “Realiti” artist confirmed in a March 2022 Vanity Fair profile that the pair welcomed daughter Exa Dark Sideræl Musk via surrogate in December 2021. Several hours after the article’s publication, Grimes confirmed that the pair had called it quits.
“Me and E have broken up *again* since the writing of this article haha, but he’s my best friend and the love of my life, and my life and art are forever dedicated to The Mission now,” she tweeted at the time. “I think Devin wrote that part of the story rly well. Sique – peace out.”
The Relationship’s Timeline - Grimes and Elon Musk
Reports claimed the musician and the entrepreneur were dating in May 2018. The two debuted their romance at the Met Gala at the time. She later confirmed that their love connection was born when he messaged her after seeing a tweet she wrote about thought experiment Roko’s Basilisk.
Musk and Grimes attended the Hyperloop Pod Competition with his five sons in July 2018. He shares twins and triplets with ex-wife Justine Wilson.
The twosome made headlines after Banks claimed that Grimes invited her to Musk’s home in L.A. to collaborate but spent an entire weekend comforting the engineer. His rep claimed to Business Insider at the time, “Elon doesn’t know Azealia Banks.” He later clarified that he saw her at his house. The rapper also posted alleged texts from Grimes, in which she claimed Musk had “a fake made up accent” and “a giant d--k.”
After their feud with Banks, fans noticed that Grimes and Musk unfollowed each other on social media, sparking split rumors. In October, they were seen together again in L.A., and he refollowed her.
Musk and Grimes added fuel to reconciliation speculation when they were spotted together in China. “Randomly, I am in China,” she tweeted at the time as he launched a Tesla factory in Shanghai.
The pair attended the Game Awards and Musk gave her a standing ovation after her performance.
The songstress announced her pregnancy in January 2020 with a NSFW Instagram post. She did not confirm Musk was the father until March.
The billionaire revealed that Grimes gave birth to son X Æ A-12 on May 4. “Mom & baby all good,” he tweeted.
Shortly after their son's arrival, the duo "experienced a lot of ups and downs in their relationship," according to a source. "[They] have been on and off," the insider told Us. "Through it all though, they have and will continue to maintain a close friendship."
"I love you but please turn off ur phone or give me a [call]," Grimes tweeted after Musk's "pronouns suck" post sparked controversy. "I cannot support hate. Please stop this. I know this isn't your heart."
The Canada native came to Musk's defense after TikTok users accused him of being a "men's rights activist," replying, "He's not. Def he's been very immature at points on Twitter but for [example] the president of spaceX is a woman, as is his right hand [person] at Neuralink, etc."
Musk revealed that he and the "Oblivion" singer had split after three years together. "[We] still love each other, see each other frequently and are on great terms," he noted in a statement.
Days after Musk announced the couple's split, Grimes shared a new song titled "Love" via her Instagram account. She said at the time that she wrote the track in response to the increased attention she faced after her breakup from the world-famous entrepreneur. "It f—king sucks to be awake / Oh, Lord, I pray my soul to take," went one lyric. "Nobody understands because everything they hate is everything I love."
After the "Venus Fly" singer was photographed reading the Communist Manifesto, she explained that she intentionally trolled paparazzi with her book choice but wasn't making a comment on her ex-boyfriend's enormous wealth. “I was really stressed when paparazzi wouldn’t stop following me this wk but then I realized it was [an] opportunity to troll,” she wrote via Instagram, adding that she and Musk were still living together.
Grimes released another new song titled "Player of Games," which seemingly referenced Musk and the couple's split. "I'm in love with the greatest gamer / But he'll always love the game more than he loves me," went one lyric. Another verse hinted at the billionaire's interest in space travel with the line, "Sail away to the cold expanse of space / Even love couldn't keep you in your place."
Grimes sparked pregnancy rumors with an Instagram upload showing a bare baby bump.
The songwriter told Vanity Fair that she and Musk welcomed a baby girl named Exa Dark Siderael three months prior with the help of a surrogate. “I would probably refer to him as my boyfriend, but we’re very fluid," she said of their relationship status at the time. "We live in separate houses. We’re best friends. We see each other all the time. ... We just have our own thing going on, and I don’t expect other people to understand."
After the feature was published, Grimes took to social media to confirm that the twosome had broken up again.
