It's not hard locating where to buy Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, the challenge is finding a retailer that has either of the games consoles in stock. Currently, U.S. retailers are pretty much all sold out of Microsoft's new consoles.

Yet with a new year comes the opportunity for new Xbox Series X and Series S restocks, as retailers look to start 2021 with fresh stock to push to keen Microsoft gamers. In a video podcast, Xbox Live director of programming Larry Hyrb spoke to Xbox boss Phil Spencer, with the latter assuring Xbox fans that Microsoft is "working as hard as we can" to make sure more Xbox Series X stock will be available.

General advice for restocks

Trying to get your hands on something with limited stock is really, really stressful. Make sure to give yourself the best chance you can by following the advice below!

Make sure you have an account at the store, and all personal information is updated. Restocks of popular items like the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S put huge strains on websites. On top of that, when it comes to items like these, retailers will only allow you to hold it in your cart for a few minutes. Don’t waste your chance trying to update your address or payment information!

Start refreshing the page early. Often, retailers won’t put stock up at EXACTLY the moment they say. It may be a few minutes early or late. Get to the store page of the item you want before the restock time. You might get lucky!

Use Ctrl+F5, not just F5. This gives you a hard refresh, that doesn’t pull store information from the cache. So, you won’t get outdated information and will be able to see the “Buy” button as soon as possible!

It’s usually better to be on the computer, rather than your phone. While that is not always the case, mobile websites aren’t always optimized for fast refreshing. Or optimized for mobile viewing at all, sometimes. However, sometimes you can have better luck on a mobile app than a browser site. It’s not very often, though, so it’s best to start trying with your computer browser, first.

Xbox Series X price vs PlayStation 5 price

After many leaks and speculation, Sony confirmed the PS5 Digital and PS5 prices at £360 ($400, AU$599) and £450 ($500, AU$750) respectively. That came as a pleasant surprise to those who'd expected the PS5 to be priced much higher than the rival Xbox Series X.

As it turns out, the full-fat PS5 and Xbox Series X cost the same, although the all-digital Series S undercuts the PS5 Digital Edition by a fair margin of £90 ($100, AU$100).

Bear in mind, however, that the Xbox Series S is less powerful than the Series X, whereas the PS5 Digital Edition is identical to the standard PS5 except for the lack of a disc drive, as reported by Whatthifi.

As frustrating as it can be to find an Xbox Series X or Series S, we suggest you avoid buying a console from these scalpers. Paying massively over the odds for a console that doesn't have a huge range of new Xbox Series X games isn’t a shrewd move in our opinion. If you can hold out until 2021 Microsoft should have more Xbox Series X units to ship, as well as the promise of more exclusive games for the console, making it a much better time to get one.
