When Does Autumn Start/End: Equinox, Top Quotes and Best Season

While it's hard to say goodbye to summer warmth and fun, there's still a whole lot to love about autumn. With fall comes Halloween, crisp breezes, and golden light.

Most people consider the first day of autumn to be the Autumnal Equinox, which this year is September 23. This is because, astronomically, the sun will be directly overhead of the Equator as the Earth`s tilt begins to point the northern hemisphere away from the sun.

As the earth revolves around the sun, at different times of the year the sun will be situated directly overhead at mid-day within the tropics. The Autumnal Equinox is the day the sun is again highest in the sky at noon over the equator as the apex progresses south. The day the sun is straight up at noon over the Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn (23.5 degrees North and South latitude) are the summer and winter solstices, respectively.

WHAT IS THE AUTUMNAL EQUINOX?

"Autumn days come quickly, like the running of a hound on the moor". –Irish proverb

The autumnal equinox—also called the September or fall equinox—is the astronomical start of the fall season in the Northern Hemisphere and of the spring season in the Southern Hemisphere.

WHAT IS AN EQUINOX?

The word “equinox” comes from Latin aequus, meaning “equal,” and nox, “night.” On the equinox, day and night are roughly equal in length.

During the equinox, the Sun crosses what we call the “celestial equator”—an imaginary extension of Earth’s equator line into space. The equinox occurs precisely when the Sun’s center passes through this line. When the Sun crosses the equator from north to south, this marks the autumnal equinox; when it crosses from south to north, this marks the vernal equinox.

After the autumnal equinox, the Sun begins to rise later and nightfall comes sooner. This ends with the December solstice, when days start to grow longer and nights shorter.

Astronomical Autumn

Usually, when we talk about the first day of autumn we are referring to the astronomical autumn which is defined by the Earth's axis and orbit around the Sun.

The astronomical calendar determines the seasons due to the 23.5 degrees of tilt of the Earth's rotational axis in relation to its orbit around the Sun. Both equinoxes and solstices are related to the Earth's orbit around the Sun.

-The influx of scary movies. At least the new Halloween movie broke records.

Meteorological Autumn

Meteorological seasons consist of splitting the seasons into four periods made up of three months each. These seasons are split to coincide with our Gregorian calendar, making it easier for meteorological observing and forecasting to compare seasonal and monthly statistics. By the meteorological calendar, the first day of autumn is always 1 September; ending on 30 November.

The seasons are defined as spring (March, April, May), summer (June, July, August), autumn (September, October, November) and winter (December, January, February).

Solstices and equinoxes

Solstices and equinoxes are considered to be the astronomical transition points between the seasons and mark key stages in the astronomical cycle of the Earth. In a year there are two equinoxes (spring and autumn) and two solstices (summer and winter). The dates of the Equinox and Solstice aren't fixed due to the Earth's elliptical orbit of the Sun. The Earth's orbit around the Sun means that in early January, the Sun is closest (known as perihelion) and in early July it is most distant (aphelion).

On the autumn equinox, day and night are of roughly equal length and the nights will become increasingly longer than the days, until the spring equinox when the pattern is reversed.

It also marks the time of year when the northern hemisphere begins to tilt away from the Sun, resulting in less direct sunlight and consequently the cooling temperatures.
