What are Joe Biden's executive orders to roll back Trump policies

President-elect Joe Biden is planning on a 10-day blitz of executive action on what his administration is calling the “four crises” facing the country. “He’s going to come back to the White House after giving that speech at the Capitol and take some immediate actions to start to move this country forward,” Klain told CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday.

Biden's executive orders would be related to the coronavirus pandemic, the ailing US economy, climate change and racial injustice in America.

"In his first ten days in office, President-elect Biden will take decisive action to address these four crises, prevent other urgent and irreversible harms, and restore America's place in the world," said incoming chief of staff Ron Klain, in a memo to senior staff.

What are Biden's executive order plans?

Within hours of being sworn in, Biden is expected to use executive orders to fulfill many of his previous campaign promises — including: rejoining the Paris climate accord, and reversing Trump's ban on the entry of people from certain Muslim majority nations.

Other plans include extending a pause on federal student loan payments, halting evictions and foreclosures, as well as mandating masks in inter-state travel and on federal property.

Biden will seek funds of $1.9 trillion (€1.57 trillion) to revive the economy, which includes stimulus checks and other aid, as well as speeding up the vaccine rollout.

Other executive actions include extending a pause on federal student loan payments as well as halting evictions and foreclosures.

The US is facing multiple challenges as Biden inherits the nation from Trump. The country's COVID-19 death toll is soon expected to reach 400,000 while the economy has been facing a downturn.

"President-elect Biden will take action — not just to reverse the gravest damages of the Trump administration — but also to start moving our country forward," Klain said in the memo.

More executive orders relating to Biden's priority areas would be signed over a period of nine days following Inauguration Day, he added.

Some of these measures include increasing coronavirus testing and favoring American-made goods for government purchases.

Biden's Plan In the following week

In the following week, Klain said, Biden plans to take additional action relating to criminal justice reform, climate change and immigration — including a directive to speed the reuniting of families separated at the U.S.-Mexico border under Trump's policies.

Incoming presidents traditionally move swiftly to sign an array of executive actions when they take office. Trump did the same, but he found many of his orders challenged and even rejected by courts.

Klain maintained that Biden should not suffer similar issues, saying that "the legal theory behind them is well founded and represents a restoration of an appropriate, constitutional role for the president."

Biden will enjoy Democratic control of both houses of Congress, if by a slender margin in the House and by Kamala Harris’s casting vote as vice-president in a 50-50 Senate.

Biden unveiled his $1.9 billion Covid-19 relief agenda, which calls for measures to help the country combat the public health crisis as well as new injections of cash to help stimulate the economy. The plan would also increase the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour.

Democrats control the House of Representatives and will soon take control of the Senate, following the defeat of two Republicans in runoff Senate races in Georgia earlier this month. But Klain said on Sunday that given Democrats’ narrow majorities, the Biden team will push to gain GOP support for its plans.

Democrats hold 222 seats in the House compared to the GOP’s 212, and the parties will evenly divide the Senate 50-50, with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris able to cast tie breaking votes.
