German Bundesliga

After Union Berlin lost all of their first five competitive games against Bayer 04 Leverkusen (3 times in the Cup, 2 times in the Bundesliga), they remained unbeaten against Leverkusen last season (W1 D1).

Union Berlin's coach Urs Fischer and Bayer 04 Leverkusen's new coach Gerardo Seoane have together won five of the last six Swiss championships (Fischer twice with Basel, Seoane thrice with Young Boys, plus Adi Hütter once with YB), but they have never faced each other in a competitive game as coaches.

Union Berlin have lost their opening game in each of their first two Bundesliga seasons (0-4 vs. RB Leipzig at home, 1-3 vs. FC Augsburg at home) – the last club to lose all 3 opening games in its first 3 BL seasons was Sport-Club Freiburg (from 1993 to 1995).

Bayer 04 Leverkusen have won only one of their last five opening games of a Bundesliga season (D1 L3): 3-2 against SC Paderborn in 2019/20. Prior to this, Leverkusen had won their previous three opening day matches.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen won only six of their 21 Bundesliga games in 2021 – of all teams that stayed in the league, only Hertha BSC won fewer games (5). Leverkusen’s nine BL defeats in 2021 are already almost twice as many as in the whole of 2020 (5).

Union Berlin is undefeated in their last 16 league home games (W8 D8) – since returning to professional football in 2008, they have only had a longer unbeaten run of home league games from 2018 to 2019 (20).

Both teams to score looks like a real banker when Union Berlin square off against Bayer Leverkusen at An der Alten Forsterei this Friday night.

This is a mightily difficult clash to assess in terms of the result, as third-placed Bayer have somewhat gone off the boil of late and face a Union side punching well above their weight in fifth.

The hosts have lost just two of their 15 league matches so far this season (W6, D7) and have been an absolute credit to their manager Urs Fischer, who will be hoping to guide his steer his side to European qualification over the coming months.

While Leverkusen are probably still a stronger outfit on their day and have tasted success in all five previous meetings between the teams, Peter Bosz’ charges are in the midst of a difficult patch following a home draw against Werder Bremen and a pair of 2-1 defeats against Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt.

A draw looks the most likely result and we’re opting for a 2-2 score-line, but the main wager has to be on both teams hitting the target at around the 4/6 mark.

There should definitely be a few goals in this one with both teams averaging two per game this season, while Union have found the net in all of their 15 Bundesliga fixtures so far.

Leverkusen have struck in all but two of there’s and four of the visitors’ last five matches have seen both teams score. With all but one of Union’s last eight ending with both teams successful in front of goal, you can see why we strongly fancy this selection for Friday’s clash in the capital, which should be one to savour.
