Use these top ten tips to make your picnic not only safe but a real success. Once sorted, all you need is for the sun to shine.

The sun is shining and everyone wants to head outdoors. Alfresco eating becomes an obsession when the weather warms up and what better way to indulge than with picnics. You need a blanket, drinks, and most of all food which is safe to eat.

Pick the right spot

Look for somewhere scenic and idyllic, lush and grassy, and with plenty of natural shade. Aim to set up under a tree to make sure you can utilize the shade in case it gets too hot, and make sure that there's plenty of surrounding space for children to run around. And if it's raining on your intended picnic date? Set up indoors! Picnicking is a state of mind, cites Countryloving.

Don't forget about a surface to rest your food

The point of a picnic is to eat on the ground, so a full-on table kind of defeats the purpose. You do, however, need somewhere flat to rest your plates and food. An old trunk is the perfect item to carry picnic items in, then use as a makeshift table. It's charming and functional. These wine glass holders are also a handy option for drinks!

Pick the right blanket

Choose a blanket that will provide enough cushioning, but that's also machine-washable in case of grass stains (or food spills!). This gingham "bearskin" rug is a cheeky, easy-to-clean waterproof option.

Make Your Picnic Simple

Ensure all picnic foods are simple to transport and not too heavy to carry. Some picnic spots are isolated with a long walk to reach them. Opt for paper or plastic plates and cutlery: also easier to carry.

Make Your Picnic Interesting

Make picnic food interesting and easy to eat – think finger food. Salad in boxes takes up much room, instead stuff pitta bread with goat’s cheese and handfuls of salad – two in one.

Things to Avoid on a Picnic

Avoid ice cream, sticky puddings, and cakes – they are fragile to transport and wasps and other insects love them. Salads and pasta’s are great for popping into a picnic box, as well as a selection of cheese and crackers, yummy! A summer’s day is never complete with a variety of fruits. There is something deliciously satisfying about eating berries and exotic fruits, while relaxing in the sun. Not forgetting a refreshing drink – juicy homemade lemonade, ice-cold water, or an iced tea – will really hit the spot!

Make it few, make it well

Prepare just a few things and do them well. To ease up on the cooking visit your local deli or farm shop and top up a few homemade goodies like mini sausage rolls.

Use a tray...

If you're having a picnic in your own backyard, you can use a serving tray as an easy way to transport items from your kitchen to your lawn. Or if you're venturing away from home, a tray can help carry essentials from your car to the picnic spot.

Clean up after picnic

Don't forget to bring along a few garbage bags so that you can leave your picnic area as clean and litter-free as you found it. Eco-friendly picnic supplies, like the compostable plates, cups, and napkins from Susty Party, will make your picnicking an even greener affair.

All the fun stuff

There are so many different activities you can do on a picnic day, and best of all you don’t have to spend a penny, just bring your own fun! Wherever you pick as your picnic spot, the list of activities are endless – Frisbee, football, cricket, tennis, huge bowling skittles, rounder’s, bikes, quidditch – you name it. If you prefer to relax a bit more, bring along that new book you’ve been eager to read, a painting, a speaker to play some music (just check if the venue permits this, if in a public place), or maybe just people watching.

Picnics are fantastic, and you can make them your own! There are many options for spots to spend the day, thing to pack, and activities to do, however the most important element is the people you picnic with, and making the most of your day together!
