Even though Ann Arbor is 45 minutes from Detroit, the university calls it a top college town. Although campus housing is available, freshmen are not required to live there. Students can join over 1,500 student organizations and 62 Greek chapters. Sports are important at Michigan, as shown by the football team's fierce rivalry with Ohio State. Michigan has several top-ranked graduate programs, including the Stephen M. Ross School of Business, College of Engineering, Law School, and Medical School. UVA's Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library holds one of 25 original Declaration of Independence copies, a Dunlap Broadside. The campus is called the "grounds," the central quad the "lawn," and students are in their first, second, third, or fourth year, according to school slang. Former US senator Edward Kennedy, journalist Katie Couric, and NFL player Tiki Barber are UVA graduates. UC Davis, one of ten UC campuses, began as a Berkeley farm school. Airport, fire department, and Eggheads outdoor sculptures are at UC Davis. Sacramento is 15 mi. Campus has over 700 student organizations and 65 fraternities and sororities. All freshmen are housed, but most move off campus or into university apartments after their first year. 25 NCAA Division I teams play for UC Davis, and the Aggie Pack is the nation's largest student organization.

UCD offers many academic programs in its undergraduate, graduate, and professional schools and colleges. Graduate schools of Management, Law, Medicine, Engineering, and Veterinary Medicine are well-regarded. Also notable are the Betty Irene Moore Nursing and Education Schools. Letters and Science, Engineering, Biological Sciences, and Agriculture and Environmental Sciences offer undergraduate programs. Public park UC Davis Arboretum has 100 acres of waterway-side gardens.

The campus aquarium and Large High Performance Outdoor Shake Table test building earthquake resilience.

UCSD has six undergraduate colleges, five graduate/professional schools, and five academic divisions. Highly regarded Jacobs School of Engineering and Medicine. Festivals like the 1980s Sun God Festival at UCSD feature carnival games, student booths, vendors, and famous musicians. The Rutgers Scarlet Knights play in the Big Ten. After 20 years in the Big East Conference, Rutgers joined the Big Ten in 2014 to compete with Maryland—College Park, Iowa, and others. The school offers wrestling, track and field, basketball, football, soccer, tennis, and golf. The men's track team won its first Big East Outdoor Championship in 2005, and the women's basketball team won the WNIT in 2014.

Rutgers was founded in 1766 as Queen's College, a Dutch Reformed Church-affiliated, all-male college. First named Rutgers College in 1825, it became a land-grant institution in 1864.
