Top 15 Best Luxury Online Shopping Sites for Rich People
Top 15 Best Luxury Online Shopping Sites for Rich People |
Table of Content |
Most luxury item consumers shop online to save time or avoid crowds. Designing an online shopping site presents unique challenges that may not be evident in other types of web design.
Online shopping has all the excitement of adding new pieces to your wardrobe without the effort of going to a store and trying things on under the horribly artificial lighting of a dressing room. But, when you're spending a lot of money on luxury pieces, online shopping can actually be a little nerve-wracking.
What if the piece looks nothing like it does online? What if the return policy is expensive or just a hassle? When you're dropping hundreds of dollars, you probably want to make sure that everything will ship relatively quickly and is easy to exchange. And, of course, you want to peruse a great selection.
Here are the 15 best luxury online shopping websites.
Should you buy luxury items online?
Online shopping was booming in popularity even before the pandemic. With companies like Amazon offering a huge range of products and a growing number of shipping options, it had become easy to get anything you needed in no time. When COVID regulations made shopping in person impossible, online shopping became the primary approach for millions who, until then, had resisted its pull.
Shopping for luxury items has followed a similar trajectory. People have realised that they can buy luxury products from anywhere in the world with a relatively short waiting time. However, there are still obstacles that make buying luxury goods online more difficult than you’d expect.
Shipping Delays
Shipping goods from abroad became more difficult during the pandemic because of service delays. Due to lockdown regulations in various parts of the world, the shipping industry could not function as normal. When life began to get back to normal, it seemed like we would see an end to these delays.
The Omicron variant set us back somewhat. While it is not as severe as other variants have been, it spreads quickly. This has led to a shortage of staff available in many industries. Shipping delays have once again led to long waiting times for goods to arrive from abroad, especially over the holiday season.
That said, if you cannot get a luxury item in your home country, waiting a couple of weeks longer than you expected is a small price to pay. Unless you are buying it as a gift or for an occasion, you can probably afford to wait.
Customs (and refunds)
The bigger issue when buying luxury goods from abroad is customs. You will pay a significant amount to customs simply for your purchase to cross the border. Depending on what you are buying, you may end up paying more than the value of the item!
But it’s not the cost of customs that presents the biggest problem. Rather, it is the admin involved and what that means for customer service and returns. Most sellers of luxury goods allow you to pay customs when you purchase from them or on arrival. They facilitate this for you so that you have no issues getting your goods. However, if an item of clothing does not fit or an item does not meet your expectations, returning it can cost you.
Many sellers will make you pay for the price of shipping. Furthermore, getting a refund from customs can be a complicated process and, again, will usually be your responsibility. In other words, if you want to buy luxury items from abroad, you have to be ready to either accept whatever arrives or go through a lengthy (and potentially costly) returns process.
Stores like FARFETCH do a good job with returns and refunds on luxury items, but even they will require you to pay the cost of delivery. The idea of paying for shipping both ways only to end up without your product may make you wary of buying online altogether.
One final issue with buying luxury goods online is that you may have to pay in a foreign currency. Depending on the payment method you use, this may mean extra fees. Furthermore, you may not get the best exchange rate available.
Selling Luxury Goods Online
There are pros and cons to buying luxury goods online, but ultimately you have little choice if you want certain items from abroad. However, what about selling luxury goods online? Is it worth the hassle and added expenses?
The simple answer is yes, it is worth it if you use the best processes. If your intention is to give customers a better experience with customs and deliveries, you may be aiming too high. But you can sell luxury goods using the systems already in place, with certain shipping providers taking care of all the admin if you need them to.
One of the issues you’ll face is currency exchange. When selling luxury goods, margins are incredibly important. Exchange rates that go against you will lower your margins. To prevent this, you can use money transfer companies like Wise (formerly TransferWise).
Wise provides cheap and efficient currency exchange. You can receive payments from buyers through any means using Wise. Since PayPal is extremely popular among sellers, you can transfer money from PayPal to Wise account with no hassle. Not only will you pay low (if any) fees, you’ll also get the best exchange rate on the market.
Luxury Goods Online: The Verdict
Whether you’re buying or selling luxury goods online, the reality is that it is not as easy as it should be in 2022. When selling goods, you have to work with the shipping companies available as well as dealing with customs, and you’ll still be giving your customers a subpar experience.
It is when buying goods, however, that you face the biggest hurdles. Buying items that you are 100% sure about is fairly easy. If you buy something like clothing, on the other hand, you may have to pay to ship your goods back for items that don’t fit. You’ll have to deal with customs to try and arrange a refund so that you’re not left significantly in the red.
Still, certain items are unavailable from any other sources. Buying luxury goods online is therefore worth it, even if it is more difficult than you’d think.

- items must be returned within 30 days;
- items can not be worn or washed;
- footwear must be delivered in the original box in its original condition;
- items must contain all tags attached and original packaging.
Consider that shipping costs won’t be returned to you along with the purchase amount. Moreover, you will need to pay extra return costs, ranging from $40 to $70, depending on your location.
To make a refund, you should fill out the return form included in your order and carefully repackage your items. You can get familiar with the Shopbop return requirements in the relevant section of the site. As soon as the website manager processes your form, you will get an email about the date of the refund.
Shopbop Shipping Review
As a part of the Amazon company, Shopbop delivers orders quickly and without delays. The store provides a free 2-day express shipping option. However, your order amount needs to be no less than the sum estimated for your location, which is usually $100 or more.
In addition to Express Delivery Service, there is Free Postal Shipping available for all countries except the ones Shopbop doesn’t ship to. To use this option, you also need to shop for $100 or more.
Consider that shipping outside the US may be subject to extra taxes, customs duties, and fees, which could affect the final shipping cost. Besides, the postal delivery takes from 7 to 20 business days and doesn’t suggest package tracking, which can be crucial for some customers.

8. TheRealReal

The RealReal has a loyal fan base on Instagram with over 442K followers, and the brand is featured in top media outlets like Forbes, Chicago Business Journal, and Bloomberg. Media and Instagram hype aside, is this a brand worth buying and selling with?
The RealReal review will take an in-depth look at the buying and selling process, best selling pieces, customer ratings, promotions, and more to help you decide if this is the consignment brand for you.
The RealReal wants to revolutionize resale. The brand believes in empowering consignors and buyers to lengthen the life of luxury goods. Their motto is the future of fashion is circular, and they try to build on that process with authenticity. Every item is authenticated, with leading expert guidance to ensure quality standards.
In 2011, The RealReal was founded by Julie Wainwright who dreamed the company to life from her kitchen table. In those days, she visited consignors at their homes in a U-Haul. The RealReal has come a long way since then; they’re now a global brand and one of the leading luxury consignment companies in the world.
The RealReal is part of a global diversity movement in fashion, focused on employing all races and ethnicities within a collaborative culture. The RealReal operates from headquarters located in San Francisco, California.
Pros
- An immense selection of designers and pieces for men and women
- Great prices compared to estimated retail value
- Customers report that luxury goods come in excellent condition
- Supports diversity in the workplace
- Accessible worldwide
Cons
- Some customers reported challenges in contacting customer service
If you have designer handbags lying around that you barely use, or feel like selling your luxury pieces to put money toward new ones, The RealReal has a straightforward selling process. The company now offers a sell upfront service, where you can sell pieces from select brands and get paid immediately.
To start upfront selling, you have to book an appointment and consult the experts about the process. Once you become a seller, you’ll then receive payments upfront through direct deposit or with site credit within 2 weeks.
The RealReal review turned up an easy selling process. You start by choosing your method. There are three ways to do virtual consignment:
Book a free virtual consignment appointment and video chat with a luxury manager
Book a free virtual expert consultation with video chat
Ship your items to the RealReal with free UPS pickup
That’s just about all the work that is involved on your end. From there, the experts assess your goods and you get paid. Not too shabby.
9. StockX
Upgrading your style can be hard when you don’t have access to the best products. Sure, it can be fun to peruse thrift stores, but after a while, you’re probably going to wish all the kids would stop dressing up like Richard Hell.
That’s where StockX steps up to the plate. This online marketing platform is a place for buyers to find sneakers, electronics, clothes, and more. These items are often a headache to track down in person.
They also provide users with a place to sell their authentic products. They have over 3m Instagram followers and have earned a reputation at the forefront of modern culture.
StockX is an online reseller that opened up shop (well, its digital shop) in 2015. Dan Gilbert, Josh Luber, Greg Schwartz, and Chris Kaufman started the company in Detroit, Michigan.
Since then, StockX has accrued over 800 employees across offices in America, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands.
The brand’s founders saw that there was a dearth of reliable spaces for people to buy and sell authentic sneakers.
It’s not hard to find shoes online, but it can be insanely difficult to find legitimate sneakers. You never know if you’re getting sold a fake pair until after the transaction has been completed.
With that in mind, StockX provides a safe place for buyers and sellers to communicate, exchange funds and products, and hold each other accountable. Every shoe, shirt, bag, and electronic device is verified by the company before it can be displayed on the market. While you won’t find any StockX shoes, the shoes they do have on offer are some of the best.
They also employ a stock market-based pricing scheme (hence the name) wherein the listed prices follow the prices of actual retailers. This means you won’t have to pay extra for products.
The process of buying and selling is simple and safe. Here are the steps to take if you want to buy from StockX:
1.Either bid on a product or buy it outright
2.The company will verify that the product is legitimate
3.Once the item passes verification, StockX will ship it to you
And here’s what that process looks like if you’re stepping into the shoes of a seller:
1.You either sell the item directly or place it up for auction
2.You send the item to StockX
3.They will check the item’s authenticity and ship it to the buyer
4.StockX will pay you for your service
It’s that simple!
10. Grailed
Photo: Grailed |
Grailed is one of the largest online menswear marketplaces. Users have to option to buy, sell and even bid on high-end secondhand streetwear and menswear. The website was created in late 2013 by Arun Gupta as he recognised the lack of menswear reselling sites in comparison to womenswear. As of 2019, the site had 3.7 million active users and today exists as one of the largest menswear and resale marketplaces on the web.
If you're looking to buy, Grailed's marketplace can be pretty extensive, so step one of course will be finding what you're after and clicking through to the product page. From there you'll be presented with a few options. You can either go right ahead and click "purchase" to buy the product at the seller's listed price or alternatively you can submit an offer.
When clicking "Offer" you will be asked to submit the price you wish to pay alongside the shipping costs set by the seller. Its worth noting offers under 60% of the listing price will not be accepted to help avoid lowball offers. Remember, Grailed is a peer to peer marketplace so don't be surprised if the seller makes a counteroffer if they're looking for more money! Once both parties have reached an agreement the buyer has 24 hours to complete before the transaction expires.
Before making a purchase it's encouraged to contact the seller through the message function to ask any questions you may have. Keep your eyes out for any offers that seem too good to be true as these might be scams or counterfeit items that have slipped under Grailed's radar.
How does Grailed authenticate goods?
As a buyer it's essential to have trust in where you're buying from, so Grailed implements a strict digital authentication process. In order to spot fake and inauthentic items, Grailed's team are all well versed in recognising an item's characteristics including tags, logo size and shape, embroidery and craftsmanship.
High-risk items such as Supreme, Jordan and high-end men's clothing are all required to have digital authentication before going live to ensure buyer protection and the prevention of fake items. If a seller is found to be attempting to sell inauthentic items, the account will be permanently frozen by moderators with a zero-tolerance policy in action. While it may seem harsh, this policy helps keep scammers away from Grailed making the experience easier for buyers and resellers alike.
Grailed's reasoning for having digital authentication as opposed to Stockx's in person is so they can save both the buyer and seller time in shipping fees as well as time.
11. eBay
Shipping and returns: Returns and shipping rates vary by seller. Most items are covered by eBay's Money Back Guarantee
Standout labels: Gucci, David Yurman, Nike, Tory Burch, Rolex
For decades, eBay has been a go-to online destination for literally anything you can't find in a normal retail store. Naturally, purveyors of luxury items like designer handbags and clothing, collectible sneakers, and valuable wristwatches have gravitated towards the site for hard-to-find items and great deals. While eBay might have a lingering reputation for being an every-person-for-themselves marketplace with little protection, it has made major improvements in overall buyer satisfaction with better shopping categories, an authenticity guarantee, and a money back guarantee.

On the 25th of June 2020, Maddie Ziegler's imagination collection collaborated with Morphe launched in Sephora Canada.
13. Rent The Runway

In 2021, the company began allowing anyone to buy items secondhand from its site without a membership. Subscribers have had the option to buy items they rented since 2016.
Rent the Runway had physical locations in New York City, Washington, D.C., Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, where customers could work with a personal stylist, and either take items directly with them or book dresses and accessories for future events. In August 2020, the company announced it would be closing all five of its retail locations, in order to focus on digital subscriptions, and would be adding more drop box locations.
According to the company, it has the biggest dry cleaning operation in the United States and possibly the world, processing 2,000 items per hour (as of 2018). The company has distribution warehouses in Secaucus, New Jersey, and Arlington, Texas.
In September 2019, Rent the Runway experienced an 11-day operational glitch and temporarily stopped accepting new customers. The company resumed regular operations on October 15, 2019, after implementing system upgrades.
14. BrookLinen
Brooklinenmakes high-quality textile products that look super cozy. You can get everything from duvet covers and loungewear, to shower curtains and towels and, of course, sheets. Headquartered in Brooklyn, NY, Brooklinen was established to sell “beautiful and ridiculously comfortable sheets that didn’t cost an arm and a leg,” according to their website. Needless to say, sheets are their thing, but are they really all they are cracked up to be? In this Brooklinen Review, we reveal all of our thoughts on their different sheet products .
Both of these Brooklinen sheets, Luxe Sateen and Classic, are made with 100% OEKO-TEX certified long-staple cotton. They are available in most standard mattress sizes, including twin XL for if you have an adjustable bed frame and two twin XL size mattresses.
Brooklinen offers four styles of sheets, but the most popular are Luxe Sateen and Classic Percale. Here’s a quick overview of all of the Brooklinen sheet sets:
Classic Percale — Made of 100% long-staple cotton with a thread count of 270. Design to be the best blend between quality and value, while offering a cooling surface for hotter sleepers.
Luxe Sateen — Also made with long-staple cotton, only these have a thread count of 480. These are what you’d consider “affordable luxury” sheets in that they’re really nice, yet the price is reasonable.
Washed Linen Sheets — Made from French and Belgian flax and individually garment dyed in Portugal, these linen sheets are incredibly popular and are a good option for hot and sweaty sleepers who want an opulent set of sheets. They are definitely on the more expensive side, with a queen size sheet set selling for around $250, but for linen sheets this price tag is actually only slightly on the high end of average. In general, when you are going for linen sheets, you are going for a more luxurious product, no matter the manufacturer.
Heathered Cashmere — Combining cotton and Himalayan cashmere, these sheets are super soft and luxurious. If you are looking for a set of sheets that will be a bit more warm and snuggly, cashmere is probably the way to go. These are a limited run offering from Brooklinen, so things might change, but currently the heathered cashmere sheets are Brooklinen’s most expensive collection. You can get a queen size cashmere sheet set for around $280.
The Classic Percale sheets set (which includes a fitted sheet, a flat sheet and two pillowcases) ranges from about $100 for a twin to $150 for a king, with the queen size sheets, the most popular size for adults, coming in right around $130.
The Luxe Sateen sheets are a bit more, for a queen size set, you can probably expect to spend around $150, for a king, it’ll be around $170.
