The United States of America is the British public’s ‘dream holiday’ for next year, according to research conducted by price comparison and financial guidance platform.

The study of 2,000 British adults, commissioned by Forbes Advisor, asked Brits about their travel plans for the next 12-18 months, including their dream destinations, likely expenditure, and how they plan to fund their trip.

For this study, Forbes Advisor focused on long-haul flight locations to determine ‘dream destinations’, as opposed to more common European getaways, as two thirds (67%) of respondents stated they considered a ‘once in a lifetime’ holiday as a medium or long-haul journey (3-6+ flight hours).

Defining a ‘dream’ holiday

1.USA

Travel between the US and the UK has been largely frozen since March 2020. When might it be possible to return to the land of Stars and Stripes?

Is the US border open to UK travellers?

Not currently. American citizens, permanent residents, their spouses or children, and holders of a few special visa categories may enter, but otherwise the US border is closed to anyone who has been in the UK in the previous 14 days — or in Ireland, the Schengen Area (most of the EU), Brazil or South Africa. The original American travel restrictions, put in place at the start of the pandemic under Donald Trump, were renewed by Joe Biden in his first week in office. Short of British travellers finding an acceptable third country to spend 14 days in before heading on to the US, westbound transatlantic tourism is still suspended, as it has been since March 2020.

When will I be able to travel to the US from UK?

If you’re vaccinated, from “early November”, according to Jeff Zients, the White House Covid-19 coordinator, which would give agencies, airlines and travellers time to prepare before Thanksgiving (November 25). No exact date has been given. The travel corridor has been in the works for a while: a transatlantic taskforce was set up in June to work on a travel corridor between the UK and US; and America’s North American neighbour, Canada, opened its borders to fully vaccinated Britons in early September.

Almost 40% of Brits are planning ‘luxury’ holidays next year, dipping into their savings to spend £2,000-£3,000 per person, according to research.

However, the cost of international holidays has increased by 27% since 2018, said the same study.

It found a long-haul trip for two will set holidaymakers back £2,396 this year, whereas ONS figures show it cost £1,894 three years ago.

The research by Forbes Advisor – a price comparison and financial guidance platform – found that the US was most popular destination for Brits’ ‘dream holiday’, with 20% saying they would want to head over the Atlantic for 2022.

Thailand holidays could be back on the cards for Brits as the country has reopened to international tourists for the first time since closing its borders in March 2020.

Its destinations are being reopened in phases, so for now it's just the island of Phuket that's open - and only vaccinated tourists will be able to visit quarantine-free.

Currently it's only the island of Phuket that's open to tourists who are fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has confirmed that double jabbed travellers can head to the island without needing to quarantine as part of the 'Phuket Sandbox' project. Non-vaccinated travellers will still be required to quarantine for 14 nights in a quarantine hotel.

It's expected that Koh Samui will also reopen later this month, while August could see popular spots such as Krabi, Koh Phi Phi, Khao Lak and Koh Yao also welcoming back visitors.
