The global production of rice is projected to reach 503.69 million tonnes in 2022-23. Of that total, USDA expects 52.83 million tonnes will be exported to world markets, according to the US Department of Agriculture’s World Agriculture Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) latest report.
China is the largest producer and importer of rice to meet its projected 2022-23 domestic consumption of 147 million tonnes.

China, the world's most populous country, has also been the world's number one rice producer for decades and is forecast to continue to lead in 2023 and beyond. China's rice production in the coming years is forecast to reach 147 million tons/year.
However, to meet the needs of more than 1.41 billion people, they have to import up to 5 million tons of rice each year and spend only 2.2 million tons of rice for export.

India, the second most populous country in the world with nearly 1.4 billion people, has always ranked second in the world in terms of rice production for decades. India's rice production is expected to reach 124 million tons in 2022/2023. India is the world's largest rice exporter with nearly 20 million tons.

Top 10 countries with the Biggest Milled Rice Production (2020/21)
In the 2020/2021 crop year, China produced over 148 million metric tons of milled rice, a higher volume than any other country. India came in second place with 122 million metric tons of milled rice in that crop year.
Milled rice
After the rice is grown and harvested from rice paddies, it undergoes a process to prepare it for human consumption, known as milling. Milling removes the rice husk and bran layers, and the end product is the rice that can be found in your local grocery store or supermarket. The total volume of milled rice produced worldwide reached 497.7 million metric tons in the 2019/2020 crop year.

The top rice consuming countries are China, India, and Bangladesh in that order. In 2020, China’s rice consumption amounted to 149 million metric tons. The per capita consumption of rice worldwide has remained remarkably stable since the year 2000, and amounted to about 53.9 kilograms per year in 2018/2019.
