Overview: Health Care in Mexico

Ranking of Mexico Health Care in the World

Mexico is a large, geographically diversified country with a sizable population. It boasts South America's second-largest population. With a high birth expectancy of 81 years for women and 78 years for men, it has a long life span.

Mexico's healthcare system is regarded as one of the greatest in the world.

The World Health Organization (WHO) ranked developing nations, and Mexico's health system came out on top.

Along with being in the top 5 nations with universal health coverage, the World Bank placed Mexico's healthcare system 10th out of 188 nations.

How many hospitals are there in Mexico?

There are more than 4,000 hospitals in Mexico where patients can receive any kind of medical treatment. About 70% of them are private hospitals. The remainder are public buildings.

The public health program accepts foreign immigrants who hold a CURP (Mexico social security number). Public health, pensions, and social security are all under the control of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS).

In a public hospital in Mexico, care might be quite limited and subject to lengthy waiting lists. Nonetheless, private hospitals in Mexico are quite advanced and have a very skilled workforce.

International Hospitals in Mexico for Expatriates and Visitors

The medical treatment in Mexico is among the greatest in Latin America and the entire world, according to Knowinsiders.com, whether you're an expat living in Mexico City, Quintana Roo, Puerto Vallarta, or wherever in between.

Some of Mexico's top hospitals are operated by IMSS. Yet lengthy wait times are another reputation of IMSS institutions. In actuality, patients who require surgery typically have to wait 12 to 15 weeks.

Knowinsiders.com Suggestions for foreigners: In Mexico, wait times in emergency rooms can reach almost a full day. Medical personnel frequently requests that people return the next day to see a doctor.

Public hospitals in Mexico will likely charge less for treatment than private hospitals for expats who are on a tight budget and lack private health insurance.

Health Insurance and Doctors in Mexico

In addition to paying for private health insurance to attend private clinics, many Mexicans enlist in public health programs.

You can choose from a much larger selection of hospitals in Mexico if you have health insurance. The quality of medical care varies by region in Mexico since private hospitals have more modern technology and better-quality supplies.

Moreover, wait times at private hospitals are substantially shorter. You can most likely schedule a visit with a specialist within a few days. The majority of patients are able to schedule any required surgical treatments a few weeks after their initial consultation.

There is usually an English-speaking doctor on duty in private hospitals in Mexico. Numerous specialists received their medical education in the US or Canada.

Yet, just like in the United States, your initial step is to visit a general practitioner (GP). Your insurance representative and expat groups are useful locations to ask for recommendations in your city.

In contrast to the United States, a general practitioner is not always required to refer you to a specialist. You can make an appointment with a specialist right away if you are aware that you need to visit them.
